Thats cool. The 77JC's are a lot cheaper but either will work fine. Lets just start with the basics -- like compression. Then look at the other stuff like good grounds. Very important. Theres some other stuff too but lets look at one thing at a time.

Is the motor on a Bass boat? Have you added any extra batteries to it? I have found moving by two trolling batteries forward helps my hole shot alot. Try putting a small piece of tape over the pee hole next time to keep bugs out when you are not using it. also try some higher octane gas. 89 or above.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

Be very carful using anything but the octane that the motor was made for. 87 in this case. If you go higher, consider going richer on the carbs to compensate.

With the top rpm at 5000-5400 youre lugging the motor now. That alone raises combustion temps. Youre running a fairly cool plug which is good. Just be careful with octane higher than 87.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

ok i finally have a chance to do some work. i have a question that is probably silly but.... here goes. I have never checked compression before. I do have a compression checker (new) but not sure how to use it. I know i run the enngin to normal temp. Then remove all spark plugs and screw in the compresstion checker. My manual says to put the throttle in WOT position and turn engine over 4 times. will i have to disconnect the shift linkage to do the check. There is a good possibility all of this could be wrong, so if i am completely wrong please lead me in the right direction. Thanks for all of the help and sorry for the dissertation :)

If you use a jumper on the soliniod you don't have to worry about the neutral interlock. The WOT is so there is no restriction on air entering the engine.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

not opening the throttle will still give you the info you need, even though the numbers may not be accurate they will still be consistant. eg: they may all read 90psi instead of 100 but you will still be able to identify any problems.

I would look at the prop, if you started it shallow enough to plug the pee hole and didnt break anything else, that may be what let go.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

I just finished the compression check. All cyllinders are equal or close to it (off @ 2-3 psi). I replaced the spark plugs with QL77JC4. Any ideas o what to check for next? Some of you mentioned grounds. What would i check for that?

Re: Trouble getting on plane

I have been having a simular problem. No power on take off. I recently was checking grounding on the coils and decided to check for plugs firing. I plugged the plug into the plug wire leaving it exposed and ran a wire with a clamp like that on a battery charger on both ends and grounded the plug (where the threds are) to the engine. I could then observe a spark right at the plug tip. Which I did not have on number one cylinder. I tried swaping coils and it would spark on the other outputs. You may have same problem as me (Bad power pack). My engine still runs but has a power loss.
Hooked
