Re: Trouble loading a 16' on a bunk trailer

My trailer has a similar setup. The only roller it sits on is a keel roller up near the front. The bunks hold most of the weight. The rear roller is only touched when loading/unloading.

With my trailer, I found that I like the trailer a little deeper in the water when launching. The boat then floats off the trailer. When retrieving, I don't go in as far. This make loading the boat easier. The boat is almost always perfectly aligned this way. When retrieving, I back in until the last foot or less of the bunks are under the surface.

Once you find what works best for your boat, it will get a lot easier. Wind and waves don't help.

So does this mean your rollers are at different heights?

You may or may not hear from FishingDan (the one you asked the question of) since the post you quoted from him was logged in July of 2005. Perhaps someone else familiar with the setup can chime in.

Not insulting you but just asking; are you trimming up the outdrive before you attempt to load? A dragging skeg can make winching hard as well.

Re: Trouble loading a 16' on a bunk trailer

Purchased a new Trophy in 2006, and ran into the same problems. Big change going from a roller to bunk trailer. Launching and recovering the boat was most difficult, nothing compared to the ease of rollers. Solved the problem by installing mylar caps to the back half of each bunk. Since most of the weight is on the back end of my stern drive, ease of launch and recovery was most improved. Quite easy to power right up to the wench now.
