I have a 1963 75 hp Johnson outboard and the few times that I have been out at the lake I have consistently had the same problem. I can start the motor up after two or three tries, but when I let it idle it always dies after only about a minute of idling. then when I try to start it back up, I have to crank it 15, 20, 25 times. Then it will run fine and start right back up any time after that. A buddy of mine at work says that I may be getting too much raw fuel while the boat sits during the week. And that this could be caused by pressure building up in the gas line and letting it into the carbs, then after initial start up this raw fuel will not let the motor start until it is completely gone.<br />His suggestion was to diconnect the gas line after I trailer my boat and then to connect it back up once I put the boat back in the water. I was wondering if any of you had any other sugggestion. In case plan A doesn't work I can have a better understanding of what is going on.

Re: trouble restarting motor

The next time you take it on the water, remove the cowling and remove the airbox if there is one and observe the carbs while you recreate the problem. Is there gas visibly pooling in the carb throat when it dies? If yes you probably have a stuck carb float and/or float valve. If not try choking it when it falters. If the choke kills it, it is getting fuel if it picks up its not getting enough. Whatever, too much fuel or too little, it is probably in the carbs. It might respond to an idle mixture screw adjustment. If not it probably needs the carbs removed and a thorough cleaning with a rebuild kit.
