I HAVE A 1990 JOHNSON, VRO DISCONNECTED AND MIX OWN OIL/GAS. PROBLEM IS IF I GO OVER 4000 RPM THE OVERHEAT HORN SOUNDS AND ENGINE SPITS DOWN TO ONLY RUN AT IDLE SPEED. I HAVE HAD IT RUN ON DYNO MACH AND WAS TOLD IT WAS TAKEN CARE OF. I AM MIXING 50 TO 1 FOR OIL IS THIS SUFFICIENT? WOULDN'T IT OVERHEAT AT 2500 OR 3500 RPM AS WELL AS OVER 4000? COULD IT BE A FUEL SUPPLY PROBLEM?
THERMOSTAT HAS BEEN REPLACED AS WELL AS WATER PUMP. WOULD APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS.

Welcome Don, first thing to do is to turn the caps lock OFF on your keyboard, it comes across as shouting, its also hard to read :D

Secondly it sounds as though it has the S L O W feature in which case you'll need to verify it actually is overheating or whether its a faulty switch or sensor etc.

Not sure if yours came with that feature mind you ;)

I'm pretty sure that motor does have the SLOW mode. My 89 50 does.

Mine did that once and if you t-stat is the same as mine, you don't have to removed the head cover to remove it. I took mine out and ran it like that for a while on the muffs. It helped flush the system and get rid of any blockage. Hope that helps.

Don your motor have the SLOW mode.
I have an Evinrude 60 HP VRO from 1990.
Control temp. switch as MCM hase told you.
The temp. switch can be faulty, and will then give you SLOW mode.
Also control, that the wirer from the temp. switch is TAN blue (broun/blue). If only broun, the alarm.temp. will start apx. 10 F before, as if it was the TAN blue switch.
Also if your TAN system hase a ground some where, it can give you alarm (SLOW).
Also there is a servicebulletin, according to the cooling-water there is going out at the pee-hole.
You can try to disconnect the wirer to the temp. switch, and test run it for a short time. If no SLOW, the fault must then be the temp. switch.

And yes, it can overheat as well at 2500 or less rpm.
Since you are mixing the gaz by your self, then be sure, the alarm wirers to your VRO pump and oil-tank are disconnected.
Overheat alarm, is one steady alarm. No oil flow is alarm every 1/2 second, and low oil in oil-tank will give alarm every 20 second.
What is your alarm, when the motor are going in SLOW ?
Anyway, Im also mixing the gaz by my self. And I have disconnected the whole alarm system, so it will not go in SLOW. Then from my alarm switch, I have installed a buzzer-alarm, and an alarm light, if the motor is overheated. Then I can manual slow down. Also I have installed a temperatur gauge, so I always can see the actual working temp.
