Re: trouble shoot problem
I was barely able to reach the coupler, and at first it felt fine but with hardened grease giving it a slightly rough feel. But then I had someone turn the engine over (ignition coil disconnected of course) and I felt some fairly large bumps in the rubber that I dont think is grease.
My question about how the coupler works: is the energy transfered from engine to splined piece that slides over drive shaft via the rubber (ie, splined piece actually floating in the rubber)? That is a lot of energy. So what I am feeling is the rubber broken up allowing the splined piece to spin within the rubber matrix.
Given that I have confirmed linkage throughout the drive shaft, there doesnt seem much left for it to be but the coupler, and I think this last test confirms that. So I am going for it. I found a tree with a large over hanging branch, that I plan to strap my boat winch to and crank up the motor to access the coupler.
I ordered a coupler, new seal (I have gasket sealer) for the outdrive, and an alignment tool to have my father bring down to Baja next week when he visits. Do I really need to buy the coupler wrench to get the coupler off the flywheel? I have bearing grease but I will try to order some quicksilver multilube. Anything else I should order? I have to do this today to get it to my father before he leaves.
