Re: trouble shoot problem

I was barely able to reach the coupler, and at first it felt fine but with hardened grease giving it a slightly rough feel. But then I had someone turn the engine over (ignition coil disconnected of course) and I felt some fairly large bumps in the rubber that I dont think is grease.

My question about how the coupler works: is the energy transfered from engine to splined piece that slides over drive shaft via the rubber (ie, splined piece actually floating in the rubber)? That is a lot of energy. So what I am feeling is the rubber broken up allowing the splined piece to spin within the rubber matrix.

Given that I have confirmed linkage throughout the drive shaft, there doesnt seem much left for it to be but the coupler, and I think this last test confirms that. So I am going for it. I found a tree with a large over hanging branch, that I plan to strap my boat winch to and crank up the motor to access the coupler.

I ordered a coupler, new seal (I have gasket sealer) for the outdrive, and an alignment tool to have my father bring down to Baja next week when he visits. Do I really need to buy the coupler wrench to get the coupler off the flywheel? I have bearing grease but I will try to order some quicksilver multilube. Anything else I should order? I have to do this today to get it to my father before he leaves.

Ayuh,... It's supposed to be all bonded together,...

Yer's no longer is....

The coupler nuts can be removed with the right end-wrench...
Ya just don't get much room for it's swing...

FYI. In the adults only section at beginning of this forum, under engine alignment how to's, post #11 has pictures of couplers gone bad- plus good info on couplers

Glad you found the info in the Adults Only section, and let others know those pics are there, see now you are contributing back to the forum..

I read you plan on using your boat winch strapped to that tree limb..Something like this would be much better

But, because you are where you are, if you are going to use the winch, may want to think of how you are going to do this.
Strapped to the branch would be dead lifting straight up and I assume prtty tough to crank.

Maybe a large pulley to the branch and a heavy rope through the pulley, tied off to a truck that can pull fwd slowly?

Re: trouble shoot problem

I actually found a neighbor that is letting me use a come-along and some chains. I also just found out that the engine weighs 695lbs, so substantially more than I thought (I assume between 300-400).

The neighbor also gave me the email of mechanic in Loreto that is supposed to be excellent, so since this is where I have to pick up my parents, I might bring it there for him to work on. I actually just tweaked my back moving the boat around.

Sorry about your back, I was just thinking that you could get seriously hurt red neck engineering the motor out down there in Baja.
Loreto mechanic sounds great..How long are you down there or is this permanent?
