89 Johnson 110. Boat has been stored for 2 years.Got boat out and did normal things before trying to start it with ear muffs.Discovered quickly after cranking motor a few times the primer selonoid was bad and leaking.Replaced that and it started.Lots of smoke and rough but kind of expected that.Put it in the water yesterday,it started fine so just wanted a short time out to see how it would run.First few minutes were rough then for a few minutes it ran ok,Shut it down then it would not start.Adjusted red tab on primer selonoid just slighty and it started but still ton of smoke and ran awful, kept cutting out and could barely get half throttle.I know i should have drained old gas and oil and plan to do so but not sure where to go from there.Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank John.....

It could very well be varnish in the carbs from the old gas sitting that long.

Yes, get rid of the old gas and try it again, but the carbs may be all gunked up. You might (small chance) get by with unscrewing the drain plugs on the carb and shooting carb cleaner up in the bowl to loosen it up a bit.

Remember the carbs deliver oil as well as fuel. If one, or even one side of one carb, isn't delivering fuel that cylinder(s) isn't getting oil. Look up the cost of a single piston then decide if you want to clean the carbs first.

Kind of figuerd thats where to start and will do so.Would that also be cause of excessive smoke in idle??
Thanks again John

Could be several things. Could be the carb bath will cure it. What plugs are you running?

Re: Trouble shooting 89 johnson 110

Plugs are Champion L77jc4.i pulled all 4 when i got back after test run yesterday, because sitting for so long and the major smoke it kept blowing(only while idling ,not running, when it ran), and they did not look bad at all).Boat had work done on it 2 years ago and don't think plugs are that old.
Note--I am looking to buy this boat from girlfriends brother, who just wants to get rid of it,so i am doing all the leg work so to speak. So its not mine yet(yes i know its an ***** backwards way to buy a boat) and don't have all info i should have,so kind of bare with me,and again SO appreciate the help you guys are giving me.Thanks alot.....John....
