This 4 cyl Volvo AQ125a has a rebuilt starter, two yrs running with zero problems since rebuild. Pulled the boat home from the marina about 4 wks ago. and just got around to doing the winterizing today. No problems running it all summer at the lake. Today, no start. Just multiple clicks repeating as I turned the ignition to start. Good battery voltage plus I tried my jumper battery pack so I know I had enough juice.

I am thinking starter. What suggestions would you give me to troubleshoot this?

thanks,

Joe

I check solenoid first,if working good then tear starter apart and check brushes and bearings.

Make sure ALL + & - connections are clean.

+1 ^^^^^^

Make sure you check all connections on both ends of the positive and negative battery cable. That means removing them and sanding to bare metal and reinstalling.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I will check and clean all connections thoroughly maybe that is all it is. Then I will have that starting battery checked at the autoparts store...maybe it is faulty. It did drain down very low after sitting for almost 8 wks with no use. I charged it up to 11.5 v using my regular battery charger, automatically charges and read 100% when it was finished. Don's chart of troubleshooting was very helpful and I will work my way through that too.

A fully charged battery should read 12.65+volts

Either your battery charger is bad or your battery is bad. The engine may not crank over at 11.5V.

Re: Trouble shooting a starter

eventhough the voltage may read 12, the battery could still be bad. connect a volt meter to the terminals and try to start the motor. watch the meter for voltage drop. too much and the battery is bad. the parts store can tell you more.
