Good morning all,<br /><br /> I am dealing with a 1982 Johnson 35 horse. Am using the Clymer Evinrude/Johnsom manual. The motor came to me with the problem of no spark. During the troubleshooting, everything passed except the charge coil output test. I am using a standard Fluke meter. <br /><br /> The book calls for inserting the red lead into pin A of the 4 wire plug and grounding the black lead. Crank engine, then do same with pin D. There should be no voltage. I read around 240 volt. The book says the charge coil is grounded. I have replaced the charge coil and get the same results. These are the brown and brown/yellow wires. Are you getting that 240vdc between A & D when spinning the engine? If so, I think the charge coil is ok.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

Is this a tiller or remote?

Unit is a remote operation and the voltage indicated is with one side grounded, either pin a or d.

Ok.<br />What is the voltage between A & D? If it's over 230v the charge coil is probably ok.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

Back to basics. Unplug the large round red connector in the motor compartment and jump out the selonoid to turn motor over and see if you get any spark. Let us know...

Rick & Hootie,<br /><br /> Okay here is what I got. <br />1. No spark with the main plug unhooked and solenoid shorted. <br /><br />2. Also now only about 35 volts off either leg and no volts between a and d. <br /><br /> Just like the old stator. What are you doing with pin d, when checking pin A for short to ground?

Try this and see what you come up with:<br /><br />Using an Ohmmeter on the high scale, insert a jumper wire into Terminal "A" into the female portion of the armature plate connector. Insert a jumper wire into the "D" of the connector. Connect the wires to the ohmmeter and see what reading you get. You should read 575 Ohm's +- 75 Ohms. If electric start model, the readings should be 475 Ohm's +- 75 Ohm's. If not within specs, replace.

I show about 475 ohms just like I am supposed to. What would normally cause the stator assy to short out (if in fact this is what I am seeing). Would a bad CD unit take anything else with it?<br /><br />I'm at the Rock and Hard place guys <br /><br />thanks Bill

dude<br /> test the input from the charge coils into the pack using jumper leads so the pack is still in the circuit. it sounds like you have already verified the stator is good. now verify you have a trigger signal. you cannot and will not get satisfactory peak voltages without either a peak reading meter or a DVA adaptor on your DMM.if you have no trigger then you wont have spark.<br /> You can also use the pin removal tool and push the blk yellow wire from the pack socket and eliminate all wiring. if when testing the charge coil input and its starts high then fades off you can bet its the pack or a trigger. once the condensers in the pack are charged ya just gotta discharge them to get more.<br /> this is a very simple syastem if the proper tools,adaptors and jumpers are used . the best meter for what your doing is a stevens CD-77. cheap reliable and wonderful to find intermittants and such that a digital just cant.<br /> good luck but test the trigger circuits although I think the pack is toast. they fail a lot.

hello<br /> again I forgot to add. its rare to see a two wire coil short. usually they open. to test if on wire is shorted use the ohms scale and test pin A to ground then pin D to ground. all voltages coming out of the stator and trigger will be AC voltages. they are not rectified yet.<br /> good luck and if ya still get no spark post us pack with the results of the trigger output test. remember the pack just rectifies and stores the spark. nothing in nothing out
