trouble with cold starts

Takes forever to start 1977 Evinrude the 1st time but fires up and runs perfect after. What should I look for?

more info needed. condition of plugs,stength of battery,condition of fuel lines ,etc...

Plugs brand new, new fuel, proper ratio.Not sure on how old fuel line is but bulb stays firm. battery 2 months old most cranking amps available but just charged and showing 100 %<br />tried with fast idle up and down.

Emeritz:<br /><br />There was a post about a month back on how to cold crank an Evinrude about the same age as yours. Used the same method on my '98 90hp Evinrude (stubborn at times)and it worked wonders...did so for the other gentleman as well. I make no promises but this is what I've done and works everytime...turn key to on position without cranking engine, push key in and hold for about 5-7 counts, let off, and crank. Hope it works for ya. It's just a method.

By motor running good after hard start condition i assume you mean under a load in water?

Thanks BP21 I will try that tomorrow.<br /><br /> OB. Idles fine and runs fine at all ranges from slow to WOT. Just takes forever to start 1st time I usually run it 3- 5 days a week so it's not like it has time to sit.

does it seem to smoke excessively when it finally starts and then clears?If you are getting good fuel delivery through carbs after excessive start attempts it would normally smoke until uncombusted fuel oil mix burns off.If it does't smoke much I would look for fuel starved condition on start-up and check compression

It does smoke for a few seconds after starting.<br /> BP21 Do you put fast idle lever up using your technique? thx for all your help

Hello,<br /> Is the electric choke operating?correctly.Pop the hood on your motor,remove airbox(if any)turn key to "on"position(do not crank),push key in(choke).Did you see the carb. plates close or move?Listen for solenoid operation at motor when pushing in choke.Any clicking?....

Our remote boxes are different but the idea is the same. I do not put it in fast idle while cranking with this technique. However, I usually give it a little rev to keep it running for a few seconds before I bring it back down. I even leave it at fast idle for about 5-8 before letting off. I never let her rev up to high rpms...just enough to get her warmed up. Let us know what happens.

I am fairly sure choke is working intermittently. once in awhile I hear the clik but most of the time nois the electric choke difficult to fix or replace? Thx for all your help. Eric

Hi Emeritz,<br />Just thought that I would jump in and add my 2 cents worth. I don't think that the seven or eight count method will work for you. Your engone has a choke, not a primer system. Your engine has to be turning over to enable the low pressure in the crankcase to pull the fuel in. However if everthing else is OK I think the following method will work. First push the key in and hold it while cranking until it fires or starts, do this with the warm-up lever raised. Some folks think that just Pushing the key in and releasing it will do it; Wrong the engine has to be rotating and the key held in to choke it.<br /> Hope this helps

Hello again,<br /><br />Almost Retired Again is correct.The motor MUST be turning over in order for the choke to work.<br />There might also be a metal(brass?)lever on one side of the carbs.It may read something like Ckoke On/Automatic/Choke off.If your motor has this feature,do this.Put the lever in the "choke On" position.Turn the key untill it starts.Did it start alot faster than before??IF SO,then your electric choke is not operating/or needs adjustment,IE>(tighten that spring wire coming out of the electric solenoid).Good Luck.
