Father in law gave us a boat 16' Mirrocraft 55 hp chrysler motor I have replaced the Starter Solenoid and the battery is new now also. Starter is now turning the motor over but there seems to be no spark at all. Fuel is being pumped to the carb i took the hose off and pumped the bulb, I do not see anything in the two lines above the floats?? and in a line up by the crank. The boat had been sitting for a couple of years but he said it did run good when he took it out last. I'm a total novice to boat engines, and a backyard mechanic at best on cars lol so any help would be very helpful. Curious what the blue thing is that the two plug wires are coming out of and has 4 smaller wires in the front of it. Its held on with a bracket and when I was taking the 4 smaller wires off to brush them of when of them was rusty and broke the blue housing nothing seemed to be under that so i just glued it back together lol. thanks again

Re: 1975 55 Hp Chrysler wont spark/start?

I've been reading some other posts about no spark issues and some mention a distributor/points? I think the blue thing I referred to in the last post is the coil but not sure. I'm not sure how to check the plugs for spark either I dont want to try and fry something until someone gives me some points on how to do this. I bought a manual for it but it seems to be pretty complicated lol, well unfortunately one post says to push these white elephants in the lake and buy reliable 4 stroke, I would really like to avoid that and get this one running again the kids and wife really want to take it out fishing : )

You said you're a backyard mechanic.

So I'm assuming at some point you've checked for spark in a car? The backyard way? Pull the spark plug wire from the plug. Put a screw driver in boot and hold the metal edge next to the block about 1/8 -1/4 of an inch away. Have someone crank the engine. You should see it arc.

If you see it arc over. Then you're getting spark.

Re: 1975 55 Hp Chrysler wont spark/start?

I did get the motor to start and it ran for a little bit. When I throttled it up it did ok(backfired a couple of times) but it seems to just die after maybe 30 secs or so. I put it in forward once to see how the prop would work. The water in the bucket was clear before i did that, now its filled with what I think is probably the oil my neighbor and i pumped into the bottom end(special gear oil $20 bucks a quart I guess). It seemed to smoke quite a bit at first also but it has been sitting for a couple of years so that could that be the main reason for that?
If the bottom end leaks oil into the barrel then would I have to replace a seal? seems to be 3 different places that it comes together is that a seal at everyone of those or a gasket?

Backyard mechanic at best, thanks for the reply about the spark check. Last time I really checked spark on a car was when i was younger with my dad.
