troubleshooting quick start

I think my J70plsis 2001 quick start function is not quitting after the temp sensor get the operating temp. I am operating the motor in neutral with the flush device. Am not sure how big should be the response. The sensor is OK. It is shorting to ground after certain temperature. I grounded the black and white plug that goes to the power pack (first and second plug) and still get same response in timing and revs. My first thought was the power pack but then thought that it could be the timer base too. Check the manual but found nothing specific for QS. Comments are appreciated.

Re: troubleshooting quick start

QuikStart packs, hot or cold, will always start in advanced mode for around five seconds.

If the engine is either cold or not running at 1100+/- RPM, the advance will stay on until one or the other happens.

On my flywheel, the advance change is about 1".

Re: troubleshooting quick start

That was good news, appreciate the info, thanks.
I turned on the motor and for one second could see it was advanced. Then after that second it went back and stayed there.
However I kept cranking the motor for about 10 seconds and still reading 28 (spark plugs off at testers, timing advanced to wot and with black and white wire grounded). So I guess my option would be try to do it in the bay. Now again the question is, how I do it? Because in the manual talks about doing it with a test wheel and in a tank. Could I just run the boat in a bay at 5000 rpm ant check the timing? I know safety would be key.
Thanks again

It helps to have a buddy along and some calm water. Basically you paint the mark on the flywheel and shoot the timing while at wot, kill the motor and make an adjustment, fire it up again and repeat until she's dialed.

Understood SKEETR. Was relying on a buddy to do the driving. The mark was painted already. Surely by the last person that did it. Hopefully tomorrow will finish that.
Thanks a lot.
