Does anybody know anything about TRS Drives? I know y'all have been helping me alot. And it's duely appreciated; but I'm still a 'lil puzzled. I've ordered a manual as well. Is there a clutch in the tranny or something that'll easily break?

Re: TRS Drives

We got quite a few of these drives down here, I’m not sure what you want to know but generally these drives were ok in their day but are getting very long in the tooth now. Problem with them is that most were fitted in high performance off-shore boats and by nature the engines would be replaced or modified to increase power but the drive was usually left as is. They were good for upto 500hp but needed consistent maintenance, which they rarely got once the boat had changed hands a few times. The merc or borgwarner transmissions that were fitted were fine, the main problem seemed to be in the lower gear set. Parts are getting very hard to get, replacement after market gears are available but are expensive, there is a replacement drive available that bolts straight up, not sure of the brand but somebody here will know what they are.

Re: TRS Drives

I was running about half throttle and opened it up full throttle pretty quickly. And as soon as I did the whole drive on the port side quit working completely. Earlier in the day it seemed to be slipping or what I call neutraling a little. Do you know what could be the problem? I didn't know if there was a clutch in it or not. There was no noise, smell, or anything else. No warning what so ever. What you think could be the problem is?

Re: TRS Drives

The clutch mechanism and tranny are a separate unit. Theoretically either the transmission or the drive could've failed. I thought you had posted something before about seeing the output shaft from the transmission spinning. If it is, and the prop isn't, I'd say the failure was within the drive unit. If the tranny output shaft is not turning, then the failure could be in the transmission.

These guys sell a complete replacement as Paulie noted above: www dot konradmarine dot com/news3.html

Re: TRS Drives

Sounds very typical of a blown lower gear set. Time to up the limit on the credit card 'm afraid.

Re: TRS Drives

Yes I did post another thread stating that I can collapse the boot in between the upper unit and the transom. I feel the shaft turning the same time I spin the prop by hand. That's why I was wanting to point towards the trannys. Is that in the right direction?
