Truck On Pontoon Boat Build!!!!

I just thought of this idea today and was wondering if it was possible. I have a 1998 Playbouy Pontoon boat that now has brandnew pontoons as of 2 weeks ago. I just bought a 2006 60hp 4 stoke mercury bigfoot today as well that will be on the boat tommorow.
The interior of the boat is shot!!! I am thinking of knocking down all the exterior walls and ripping out all the seats, consoles and anything in the boat.
I have located a 1998 Ford F150 that has a blown motor and bad tranny. I am buying if for almost nothing. I am thinking of taking the cab and the bed off the frame and bolting it to the pontoon boat!!!!!!!!! I am hoping of hooking up the spedo, fuel gage, and using a hot foot for the motor throttle.
I am thinking of hooking up the headlights, interior lights on one battery, and the radio, VHF,Depth finder, to another battery. As for the gas tank I am thinking of putting it in the engine bay sence there wont be any motor there anymore.

What do you all think of this project? What do you think i might encounter as problems with this project? Please all info and comments on this would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

Re: Truck On Pontoon Boat Build!!!!

Thanks! I am really looking forward to building it. I dont really think weight will be an issue because I am not using the frame on the boat, just the shell of the truck. I am guessing it only going to be around 400 lbs, but like I said before, all of the consoles and seating are coming off the boat fisrt, that should lighten it up about 300 lbs. So im hoping for only around a 100-200 lbs increase.
Any one else? Please comment!

i agree with Fman. teleflex steering, mount the helm box under the dash and extend the steering wheel shaft up the steering column, you could rig a shift cable to a floor shift. what are you going to do with the wheel wells? you have to post picture as this project goes along.

If you do this, and it sounds like mucho fun, you need to fab some half tires to put in the wheel wells so it looks like the truck is imbedded in the pontoon deck...like it drove there and sank to the hubs or was "cast" into the pontoon. That should turn a few heads.

How about remote start, keyless entry, stereo system, heat, air conditioning.d:) The possibilities are endless. The only problem I see would be matching the resistance values from the fuel level sender to the for instrument cluster, same with the speedo. Sounds like a sweet idea. I would love to see some pics once you get started.

I realize you are getting the truck for a good price but it seems the interior space is going to be very limited. If I were looking at a project like this I think I would try to find some type of van so you can use more interior space. Please post pictures as you go on this.

Re: Truck On Pontoon Boat Build!!!!

I will post many pics of the project along the way. I like the idea of the half wheels in the wheel wells. Also The truck is an extended cab so It will be able to seat four inside and the rest can sit on lawn chairs in the truck bed. Eventually I would like to put a small generator and a/c in the engine bay. ANy other comments?

they make small self contained marine air conditioners, the would fit in the engine compartment, and probably use the existing coils under the dash. just put an air mattress in the bed . what would be really cool to cut slots in the floor near the wheel well and put shimmer hud caps on it.

My first thought was "cool". My second, what would Coast Guard/ DNR say?

Apparently the coast guard didn't think too highly of this one... They sent the boaters back to Cuba then sank the boat! http://havanajournal.com/culture/entry/cubans_found_at_sea_on_pickup_truck_converted_to_motor_raft/

yardbridge, all his doing is setting the body on it. as long as he doesn't exceed the weight his should be, OK.

If you want to cut down on weight try a one piece fiberglass front end as well, maybe a box made of fiberglass too !low maintanace and light weight !8)

When I do start the project i will make sure to keep everyone up to date with pictures, specs and anything anyone wants to know. I think the coast gaurd wont have a prolbem with it, it will be under the weight resrtiction. What is the link to those self contained marine a/c's? Thanks

It would keep down on the weight if you made sure to keep all of the illegal cuban defectors off of it.d:)
