We joke about it. But would you not like to know what you are really buying? Designed where? Parts made where? Shipped from where? Packaged where?
Wouldn't this at least help to scrutinize when you buy? Hmm, this was designed by whosit, made in china, shipped to atlas usa and packaged by(fritx, plix, morix or stupidix.) First costs $100, next costs $90, third costs $80 and the last cost $50. Which would you buy?

Nafta was started during Clinton. The Only problem was the original idea was we had enough smart people in buisness to use this. We didn't. They were and are still the scum of the earth.
They do not care about America. They care about themselves. How can I make more money? Layoff people! How can I make more money? Outsource. How can I show someone else is the problem?
It use to be the Communists. Now It is the liberal"s. it is so easy to say it is the governments fault. It is only denial.
It is all of us. We want to all make good money(I make 20,000 a year and the CEO makes 500,000 plus stock options. This for a MBA? Six years of BS?) BS.
We all suck. But the ones who think they are better then everyone? Priceless. You are all supid.

If you keep the old iron up to snuff and stock spare parts, you don't need new.

G,Day
I Think this is the Mix
Johnson/Evinrude, 2 Strokes made by Bombardier in canada, 4 strokes made by suzuki, they also have a small plant in China.
Mercury/Mariner, 2 Strokes mainly made in Fon De Luc USA, Some motors built by Tohatsu in Japan (Which is owned 50% by Merc), 4 strokes made by Mercury, Tohatsu or Yamaha(powerheads only), they also have a plant in Belgium and I think a plant in Canada.
Yamaha, Mainly build their own motors in Japan but I believe that Merc make tha powerheads for the 40-50-60HP 4 strokes.
Suzuki, They do their own thing in Japan and, they also build 4 strokes for Bombardier.
Tohatsu, As I said before owned 50% by Mercury, build motors in Japan under Tahatsu or Nissan brand names, also build some motors for Mercury.
Honda, They build their own motors in Japan, Mercury were building some gearboxes for them but I think that they are 100% honda now.
As you can see everyone is in bed with everyone else, Here in Australia I drive a Ford made by Mazda, I can also buy a ford made by Suzuki and I believe that you Yankees can buy a Chevrolet built by our own car company the all ozzie built Holden!!

Whaley,

Bombardier makes the Johnson 2-strokes and all the Evinrudes in their Sturtevant Wisconsin factory.

The 6 and 8 hp 4 strokes are made in a Hong Kong plant.

WillyBWright and telmanmn: Don't forget that the world doesn't revolve around America. Everyone everywhere has to make money somehow.

I'd like to know the three separate dealers that made this obviously stupid statement. I wouldn't buy so much as a sparkplug from any of them. Obviously they don't know much about the product!

Tohatsu makes Mercury models from 2.2 up through 50hp, in some markets. Mercury does not own any of Tohatsu.

Internetoutboards is right….Mercury doesn’t own Tohatsu. Brunswick owns a major share. It is not enough to be a controlling share but they have major pull. How do I know this?? I used to work for Mercury Marine until a short time ago. I now work for a different company in the recreation field. The small two and four strokes are made in Japan There is a new plant being built in China and will be done very shortly. Honda gearcases where built for them buy Mercury and they got in a shuffle about it and that put an end to that. At this time Yamaha builds almoat all the four stroke powerheads for Mercury. There are no Mercury engines built in Mexico. The plants that are down there are only assembly plants for cretin components like electrical harnesses. Mercury is moving away from getting engines and major companies from other player in the field and is going to stop doing the same for other companies. In the next two years look to see a totally different line all the way from the little engines to the big hp. I can’t say what they are or will be because I am still under legal documents that I had to write my name to but the entire line will be different then it was a year ago.

Let me be specific. Brunswick owns zero percent of Tohatsu. Brunswick and Tohatsu have a limited partnership in a piece of land and a building that Tohatsu then leases to build black colored engines for Mercury. Tohatsu has always been and will probably always be 100% Japanese owned. Every Mercury employee that I have ever met has the same story. They all sincerely believe it. It just happens not to be true. I wish it was true. And for the record, I used to work for Tohatsu's U.S. distributer. I have heard this rumor for the last seven years in one version or another.
