Working from the numbers in that graph, the "225" HP E-Tec puts out a peak of 240 HP at 5500 rpms, while the Yamaha puts out a peak of only 217 HP at 6000 rpm - and that's IF the numbers on the graph are to be believed. The source of that graph - salesmen. :D

great post and my respect you seem to be one of the few here who fully understand what engine torque is and what not.

correct - if these numbers are right the 225 etec is a 240 hp and the 225 yamaha only a 217 hp . IF these numbers are right !

For that Evinrude vs Yamaha video, the Yamaha lost fair and square in a 4 stroke vs 2 stroke battle.

Evrinrude went head to head more recently against a Mercury 4 stroke with similar results. Both engines were 150 HP setup just like the Yamaha video. While the Mercury powered boat didn't get capsized like the Yamaha boat, it was pulled backwards a good ways before they stopped.

To Mercury's credit though, they have tried hard to get 4 strokes to perform like 2 strokes in regards to torque and ease of maintenance (not counting the Verado's).

Boater 1234,

You are considering 4 strokes versus 2 strokes yearly $$ oil saving differences, on 4 strokes you must include hidden costs too : oil filters, timing belt change, which adds more $$ to the 4 stroke theoretical oil savings.-

Happy Boating
