Trying again...

I posted this once, but the answer was off topic, so thought I'd try again...see if I get some guidance!

I've read all the posts concerning the water jacket issues about water leaking around plugs, but just can't seem to find any gasket or part labeled "water jacket" for my motor, so here we go.

I have a '72 Merc 650 and I put a water pump kit on (it wasn't peeing before). With the new impeller, it MUST be moving water cuz it it squirting out around the two bottom spark plugs. I had replaced the gaskets in that area, but I did not put any "liquid" gasket w/it, which apparently is what everyone does. Anyway, I cannot find anything that refers to a "water jacket" for this motor.

Also, I see where you all have talked about sealing around the plugs themselves. Not sure what you are talking about exactly. Anyone got a diagram?

Had a "part-time" boat mechanic tell me my motor was fried, that's why water is coming from plugs, since I had replaced the gaskets. I think he just wants me to sell it to him....cheap.

Is there something catastrophic that could be wrong to cause this issue? It didn't start until after the new pump parts, but then again, the old impeller was totally gone so who knows if it would have happened before. Thanks once again, for all your help!

One more thing...I only see ONE gasket for this area, and it is called a GASKET, CYLINDER BLOCK COVER 27-60310. I have replaced this already, but like I said, I used no liquid gasket. Don't know if this helps or not. Thanks again.

Re: Trying again...

Thats the cyl. block cover thats leaking, when you have it off ck and make sure the seal surface around the plugs is .015 higher than the out side surface, if not we use a press and carefully bend the cover area at the plugs, without preload and sealer you are sure to have a leak--Bob

Re: Trying again...

thanks all. I did see when I took off the block cover that apparently, corrosion has caused some "pits" in the cover. I JB welded them, Permatex and the new gasket...NO LEAKING! Yippee!! Of course, now I have a NEW problem...if it's not one thing...well, you know the rest.

I've posted the new prob with a new topic, so if you can help w/that one....come on down! (topic is "'72 650 won't idle".) thanks again all!!!
