Trying to check out my stator...please help!

I found this from a early post while searching but still want to know what resistance is too much/ not enough.....

I'll have to check the new stator that I have in the barn to be sure, however, Mercury, Force and the CDI replacement stators all are built with Yellow wires to the battery charging coils and use blue/red wires to the ignition charging coils.

These are two separate electrical systems both mounted on the same steel core.

With wires disconnected there should NOT be any continuity between yellow to either blue/red.

Disconnect BOTH yellow wires from the rectifier and retest for spark, if now spark on all three then replace the rectifier. A failed charging system can leave a magnetic field in the stator core which obstructs the field in the ignition charging system.

This stator is from a 1986 Mariner 200HP that will not rev over 1500 RPMs. I noticed the 2 yellow wires insulation is crumbling and discolored as if its been very hot/cooked. Maybe a bad rectifier too??? Anyway I could not find anything to tell which wires to check so I checked everything and here is what I found...

Yel-Yel....0 ohms
yel-blk....5.1K
blk to iron frame of stator....open/infinite
yel-red....5K
yel-red/wht....5.3K
yel-blue....11.5K
yel-blu/wht....11.9K
blk-red....151
blk-red/wht....157
blk-blue....6.6K
blk-blue/wht....6.7K
red-red/wht....306
blue-blue/wht....13.3K
red-blue....6.4K
red-blue/wht....6.9K

Any suggestions? I can post pics if needed of anything.

Thanks in advance,
Gary

iam only going from memory these should be close. your digging to deep .battery charge y/y 0.1/0.3 lowspeed b/bw 280/300 high speed r/rw 80/90.also from stator body/ground to each wire should show open/O.L.

Thanks for the info guys! Couple more questions if you don't mind.

1. The stators high and low speeds were about double what was listed, probably bad but not a guarantee. Yellow wires are a charging circuit and should not effect running, if i am right. correct?

2. After checking the website link, I went ahead and checked the pick-up(trigger) just to make sure It was good. The link said it should be 750-1400 ohms. I have 6 wires, 3 going to each switchbox(violet, brown, white). I disconnected all 6 and measured the resistance going to each switch box. All combos were totally open/infinite. Aw crap, just when I thought it must be the stator, now I am not so sure. I am sure the meter is working correctly. Like I mentioned earlier, the original problem was it will not rev up past 1500 rpms, she starts and idles fine.

Any more suggestions, checks? Should I order both? There is both for my exact engine on ebay right now for $75. Good buy for used?

Thanks a ton,
Gary

Are you sure your meter's OK? It would be impossible for the engine to run at all with a completely 'open' trigger.

And, stator readings twice those of specifications are definitely bad (assuming your meter is accurate).

First I'd check things out with a known good meter before replacing a bunch of expensive parts..........ed

Any resistance readings between the charging coils and the ignitiooon coils on a stator are highly suspect, HOWEVER, the most reliable tests for stators and triggers ia done using a DVA Meter either running or cranking the engine.

I'd almost be willing to bet that the fact that it does run then the trigger is fine but the high speed windings of the stator are about toast.

Because there is NO RETURN ON ELECTRICAL PARTS, prove the stator faulty before you spend $$$$ for a NEW one, I would NOT buy a used stator on Ebay, what can you do when if fails?

Roger that, I'd recommend the "CDI" brand aftermarket replacement stator. I've used them many times on various motors and have never had one go bad.

I ordered a new stator and new pick-up(trigger) 2 days ago. I'll let you guys know if it fixes my problem, 99.99% sure it will. Thanks for the help,
Gary

Hey CharlieB, I was raised in Elsberry mo and played Wright City a lot in sports. My sister lives in Warrenton too.

Swapped both the pick-up(trigger) and the stator and the engine runs great again...thanks for all the help guys!
