Anyone want to try to figure this out with me  Im ondering if anyone has an idea of why my s/n would come up as Thruster. My title says 1990 v-200 EL s/n oc941225 and that is whats on the motor as well. They used the motor for racing back in the 90's and did alot of modifications. I think it is a 2.4L with a s/n range c221500-c291519, but id like to know if anyone has an idea of why the s/n would be changed or what it would be for this motor, it would help to order parts and I just want to know.

I found someone online with the same problem as me at justanswer.com

No, I could but its to hard to read (believe me thats what it reads). The S/N is on the transom bracket so maybe that was changed. I don't see why they would change the s/n. I could take pictures of the motor. The modifications that I know of are: reringing, larger jet sizes, 6 holes in the shaft/exhaust housing, and grates on the sides of the cowl for more air to the carbs.

What are the numbers on the motor itself? What is on the plug on top of the motor? That number you got from the transom bracket is obviously wrong. Mercury isnt known for screwing things up that bad and one number off can totally change engine groups.

You know I just dont know where to look, I know there is a round disk with 200 on it (must be the plug?). The other numbers, I was thinking were part #'s so I really just dont know if they would have a place for a # that would help me figure this out. I've double and triple checked that # on the transom bracket, and my parts guy called and we figured out its a 2.4L from the bore size.

Look at the plug on the top rear of the motor near the cylinder head in that #23 location. Its got numbers stamped in it. Those are the powerhead serial numbers.

I think it is a 2.4L with a s/n range c221500-c291519,

Why do ya think this?

Not all merc/mariners have tha number stamped on tha welsh plug. I don't know why some do and some don't, but tha 200 on it does indicate it was a 200. A High Performance motor will have a serial number stamped vertically on tha port side "block" half flange close to tha advance timin' arm. ALL V6's will have a "build" date stamped in tha same area at tha bottom of number two cylinder. There was a "block change in '90/'91. It will depend on tha block design on whether or not its a 2.4 or 2.5. Tha '90/'91 2.5 200 is very easily reconized by the reed plate/reeds. Its tha "only production" (carb or efi) that has 7 petal reeds. Do tha heads have locater dowel pins?

Just because tha s.n. on tha clamp bracket matches tha title It doesn't mean that's whats on tha boat. Especially given tha age and ya say racin' has been involved. Tha modifications ya mention are very minor ta say tha least. They really don't do much for performance but give ya that impression with tha added noise.............Jmo. PICTURES! Mainly port side and reed plate.....

We called mercury and I had to measure the cylinder bore size they said (cant exactly remember) if its under 3.4" then its a 2.4L and it was. not sure if that was the measurement but it was under. Ill try to get pictures today. Ive been using this site for parts:

http://www.**********

This is the cowl design and chokeplate: http://www.**********/parts/search/...ate and Throttle Levers(Design II)/parts.html

http://www.**********/parts/search/...HRU 0C100860/Cowls and Front Cover/parts.html

This is what the reed block looks like its the bottom one 19-28: http://www.**********/parts/search/Merc2/Mercury/V-200/5624878 THRU 0C100860/Reed Block/parts.html

Not sure if this helps but these parts work s/n range 5624878 THRU 0C100860

Never bothered ya before......

Looks ta be a 2.4 200 with tha 200 stamped in tha welsh plug. Were tha cylinders chrome, steel or a combination of both. Look for tha "build" date I talked about. Those cowls went away in '88. Were not used after tha '89 40 amp chargin' stuff came out.........

LoL ya thats all the mods I know of. I think they were crome. Didnt have a chance to check the motor today. Good to know they stamp a build date somewhere. It prob was 1988 and sold in 90. Thx for the help. Ill get back to you when I check that. Ya they prob just made it look good but maybe they did something else to it, im far from an expert ;)
