Trying to get my paperwork straight to get my boat/motor titled here in the great state of SC. I need a serial number from the motor. It's a 1978 Merc 900EL. I am told that there is a sticker on the port side of the motor. Well, I found where it was, but it is totally unreadable. SC DNR tells me that there is always a secondary on the powerhead. Where would I look for that? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I know how to do some outboard repairs, etc., but just don't know all the specific part names.

Power head is the main guts of the motor under cowl.look around top of motor and around flywheel for plate or stamp.

Thanks, will take a look tonight. The guy I bought it from said it was a 79, but there is a sticker on the motor under then cowl that gives the timing degrees and it says 1978 on it, so I'm going with that.

Up until the 80's the serial # was on the tilt tube between the clamps like in this picture.

Re: Trying to find serial number

If you cannot find a serial number, look on the starboard side of the motor, near where the crankcase cover joins the crankcase, about 1/2 way up the motor. There is usually a block part number and perhaps a serial number. If P/N, you can match to the listing in Crowleymarine.com parts list.
