250 cu. in. IL6, with pre alpha drive. when i start boat, there is a clanging sound for about 3 to 5 seconds from the back of the motor, more towards the driver's side. sounds like flywheel hitting starter teeth or something. pulled starter and pinion teeth look ok for now. anyone had a solenoid that wouldn't completely pull the pinion from the flywheel? there are no shims between the starter and mounting boss. anything else back there that would make a clanging noise?

I had that happen once. It started when one of the starter bolts worked its way loose and the starter wasnt tight to the block. I had to take it off put it back on and all was well.

Mine is doing that right now...after I just replaced the starter. I'm going to try loosening the bolts and prying the starter forward (away from the flywheel) while I retighten. I really don't want to start messing with shims down in there....

think i solved the problem. pulled starter and added 0.030 shim between the starter and the housing. started boat in driveway and no noise for now. will do a river check soon. i feel for you mechanics that work on these things everyday. it is a pain working upside down in a confined space.

None of those engine ever had shims under the starter while they were OEM. Have you guys thought about changing the starter mounting bolts so it aligns the starter properly? Every Mercruiser starter comes with new bolts...... I wonder why. With the new bolts there is never any slop between the bolts and starter.

Hoot, now you know why shops charge so much. What other profession do you know of that has to be able to work standing on his head, hold a starter start bolts and be able turn wrenches, all this before your head explodes because all the blood has gone to your head. Most boat owners that don't work on their own boats don't have a clue.
