Trying to get to the inside of my hull

Hi everyone,

I have a 19’ bowrider. V-hull. Last summer, I hit a rock (at a slow speed) and it caused a pretty good sized ding in the bottom/center of my boat. The ding is a few feet from the bow – just after the V in the hull (if that makes sense). If you would look at it from the top of the boat, it would be in between the front bow seats.

Anyway, my patching of the boat is more for stopping the water from leaking in (I’m not going for perfection or looks). I’ve done an ok job of slapping some fiberglass resin and cloth into it. But, it still takes on a little bit of water. I was hoping to patch it from the inside, but the area above it (between the bow seats) is fiberglass. So, I’d have to cut a hole in the fiberglass to get to it (no other way to access it). I don’t want to patch up the fiberglass where I’d cut it. So, I was thinking of just installing a deck plate. That would give me enough access to get to the hole from the top, and I wouldn’t have to trash the way the boat looks by cutting a hole and trying to patch it.

What does everyone think?

Here is an example of the deck plate that I’m talking about:
http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...=098562767&**********=871990515&view_id=22069

or

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...rch_in_category=t&view_id=20430&page_number=3

or

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/10001/-1/10001/7093/10001/12946/12945/24

imho i think you will have it install a hatch type situation. a small one, like a ski hatch, but smaller. it will also give you access later, to check on the repair. stop the leak any way you can.

The leak is pretty much stopped.. it's just when I'm done boating, a small amount of water kinda drips out from where I patched it.

A small hatch would work too. It's not a great looking boat anyway, but I still wouldn't want to make it any worse when cutting up the floor.

I wonder if there would be foam under the floor up there though.. That would be easy to cut away though.
