hello everyone, my friend have a 1983 searay 210 fisherman with a 350 chevy engine serial # B552378 alpha one drive,

well last week we went fishing during fishing at one time we try to restart the engine almst like locked up anyway we got it start and back to the dock five days later he try to start but it broke the face off the starter.
got the starter rebuild, turn over the engine by the flywheel it turn so we install the starter. try start with keys and it jam a little but start and run fine. now back to the fishing ground sat and the engine start making rattle noise like bering going bad limp back to the dock , pull dipstick and wow milkshake oil. pull manifold and risers took out all the plugs and crank engine tons of water coming from number 8 cilinder crank and crank it seems as if it would not stop, but it did. spray wd40 and mystry oil in cilinders and leave it.

so what you guys think

head gasket, manifold, or risers ??

thanks for any help
he order new manifolds the risers is about two years olds

in my opinion, always always always check the manifolds first! Since the risers are bolted to them, check them at the same time. Also, make sure if there are supposed to be shutters in the exhaust, that they are still there & working properly

I would say that you should replace the shutters then. Especially if the they are the ones on the top of the y-pipe & easy to get to.

The old ones are likely stuck in the bottom of the y pipe blocking exhaust (and water) from leaving the drive. This will kill engine performance and eventually cause overheating or possibly a blown head gasket. Pull the drive and get the old ones out of there.

w/o the exhaust riser, perform compression and leakdown tests, ( to check for cracked head/piston/rings), to varify the exhaust manifolds condition.
Q) did you test the manifold/s and risers?...sl

I am no Merc mechanic, but the manifold is the problem. It don't get much more clear than that. Yes, this is an "I told you so"!

I hope he's paying you well, to do all this extra work!

So the manifold "looks" good, that's fine. How about having it tested?? It had to come off first in order to remove the head, so it's still off right? Take it to someone that knows what they are doing, and have it checked.

If you have the manifold off...rig a hose pipe to one end and block the other even if you just hold your hand over it. If you see water squirting down into the intake or exhaust ports you know the jacket is cracked on the inside and not visible from the outside. If you can't get it to hold pressure pull the risers off and block the passages with metal strips or rubber like from an inner tube and hold down with riser bolted on then re-try the hose pipe trick to check for leaks.... exactly how I found my cracked manifold and solved my #8 cylinder full of water problem... I also was able to see a crack in the head next to the #6 exhaust valve...apparently common problem caused by rust breaking loose and clogging cooling system and a very good reason to have an over heat warning horn on your boat. I believe my cracked manifold was the result of the previous owner cranking the boat immediately after an overheat and seizure. Cold water on hot cast iron will crak the bejeegers out of it.
