I have an old Evinrude, 2 cylinder that I can't identify. It looks to be a late 50's model. The model number is hard to read (first number is damaged) it's 1036E or 4036E. The ser.# is E02898.This motor has a single clamp to tighten on the transom. Any help out there? Thanks

Re: Trying to ID an old Evinrude

Evinrude 4036 would be a 1970 2 cylinder 4hp. Excellent motors but I thought only the 1.5hp/2hp had a single clamp. I guess you learn something new every day.

Does it have a fiberglass cowl?

EDIT: Whoops, 4036 could also be a 1934 Evinrude 8.5hp.

my "cheat sheet" shows 4036 as 1970 4hp.

Yeah, The single clamp is different. This motor doesn't have any fiberglass at all on the cowl. It looks almost identical to a 1959 Johnson 3HP that I have with the only real difference being that the top of the shaft close to where it attaches to the powerhead is wider than the Johnson. Thanks

Oh, I wonder if that's not one of the folding outboards. They seem to fit your description. Have a look at this ebay one:

3636E would be a 1966 one. Which numbers are you confident in?
The folding 3hp came out in '66 and in '68 they went to fiberglass cowls on it. The '66 has a white fuel tank while the '67 is blue.

Cool little outboard if thats what you've got - very collectable. It is virtually identical to your '59 if that's the case except the mid-section of course.

Re: Trying to ID an old Evinrude

Okay, the motor I have looks similar to the one on ebay. The lower unit is identical except for the folding section. Mine has two small ears on the back of the top cowling. Those are the main differences. After some more cleaning and magnification the model# looks like 4036E; ser# is E02898(no doubt). 4036 is a 1970 4HP but as I said this thing has no fiberglass on it at all. I wonder if someone frankensteined pieces together to make this thing. It runs great.

Hi Captain,
Frankenruding is not unheard of. How about the model number off the freeze plug on the motor block? There were some mid-1960s non-folders with the single thumbscrew attachment. If the number on the freeze plug doesn't match the one on the clamp, then you've got a Johnny Cash motor of sorts...
- Scott

The freeze plug is where I got the numbers from. I'll look the clamp over again and see if I missed any numbers there. Thanks Scott

Re: Trying to ID an old Evinrude

Okay! I looked on the clamp again and found a plate that says "3532A" which makes the lower unit a 1965 3HP. So it looks like someone took a 1970 4HP powerhead and grafted it onto the 1965 lower unit. Probably used the recoil and tank off of the '65 too. Thanks to everybody who took the time to pick at this puzzle. (Wish it would've been a folder though)
