It's a 1984 Wellcraft 140 Merc, American 180 that I bought 8-07. I do know from paper work that the outdrive has been replaced twice (hit a rock according to paper work) the last time in 1999. I have removed and split the housing and the lower unit shaft has the preload pin and o-ring, from searching the net I have a pre-alpha R if I'm correct. The upper gearcase does NOT have the external hoop on it, is pre-alpha R's supposed to have one? The lower case has mercriuser cast into it on top. So I'm thinking it was a rebuilt unit from Merc, would I still order a pump for a pre-alpha R ? Thanks

46-96148A8 is the complete rebuild kit and 47-89984T5 is just the impeller kit. I reccomend the rebuild kit.

ms.com, along with any other marine aftermarket store will have some fine, cheap glm copied mercruiser parts for ya......
any mercruiser store will have the oem for you... more expensive, yes. better quality, yes. made for mercruiser, yes..... i agree with fb, at least do the waterpump houseing along with the impeller.... better yet, looks like the kit comes with that + the waterpump base and seal too.... get the oem. ya've got the numbers even provided for ya....

definately buy the complete kit, base included. the base gasket is a common over heat cause because its not always changed, goes soft falls apart and creates an air leak into the pickup. not to mention the corrosion that lack of service in this area causes

If you are replacing the impeller because it's "Time" and as a preventive maintenance type job. The impeller, new gaskets & seals for the pump, is all you really need.
Now if you ran hot for lack of water flow, replace the complete pump. The heat will distort it, bubble it and in general destroy it.
If you had no problem with overheating, why replace all of it. unless you just like to spend money.

BTW, our host here, iboats.com, sells parts! Kind of how they make money to pay for this free site for everyone.

Just go to the top of this page and click on Merc IO parts.

There is no sign of overheating. Do the rebuild kits come with new shaft seals for the base? It looks like the MC #1 uses a different use a different base as alpha one, is this correct?
