We recently received a 1960 Dorsett. The motor we are told runs great, but no one can tell us what it is. All we know is that it's an Evinrude. We haven't' had a chance to take it in to any shops yet (just brought it home today) but I was hoping for unbiased opinion before I do that anyway. If possible, does anyone recognize this motor? We looked for a model number but couldn't find one. Of course, we may have been looking in the wrong spot. The boat is pretty hammered so we are thinking we may just sell everything- but first we need to know what it is, and what it might be worth. I would guess there is probably 100s' of different ones that looks like this, but Im' hoping someone might be able to identify it. If you can figure out what it is, Assuming it runs great, any idea of what it's worth (just the motor)? Thank You!

Re: Trying to Identify Evenride Motor

Based only on the design of the motor cover it looks like a 1956 Evinrude of some sort. Its hard to tell since in has been poorly re-painted. Problem is that many of the engines from that time had interchangeable covers, so if you were to lose or break one, you could simply swap it for one of a different year with the same hp.

In one of the pics it looks like the standard tag with the model/serial numbers on it (where it would be) has been painted over or removed. There should be a round metal plug on the engine block. It will also have the model number on. If you can get the model number and post it back, we can tell exactly what you have.

It looks to me like about a '56 30hp or a '57-58 35hp. They're good running engines but they have no antique value. It looks like it is a Johnson with an Evinrude cover, but it's tough to tell with all that "painting". The cowl appears to match '56 but really that doesn't mean a lot.

If you could get some shots of it with the engine cover off I could be more specific. Specifically the cylinder head would determine if it's a 30 or 35hp.

EDIT: Ah, too slow. :D The model number on those engines was found on a plate on top of the tilt/swivel bracket, between the two transom clamps. It's usually kind of hard to see in there and often covered in grime. Failing that, the round plug is in the top of the engine block, near the back end where the spark plugs are. Many shops won't look at engines that old but they're pretty easy to wrench yourself if you've got a mechanical bent.

1957 35hp. You looked it up correctly. You will want to run that motor at 24:1 gas:eek:il. The bearings in those motors need a rich mix. If you don't know when the impellor was changed last, its good practice to do that.

57 35 hp big twin electric start. 24:1 fuel mix use TCW3 rated oil.
