1980 Mercury 115 tower of power.
I'm gearing up to do the "synch and link" procedure i've been reading about.
I'm working on verifing that the number one cylinder is topping out at tdc. It doesn't seem to be anywhere close. I'd guess its about 100-120 degrees off. (why is this Capt Ron")
Could the fly wheel be off another motor. It's red.
The motor runs....... The markings are clear on the flywheel. The pointer is adjustable.
Any help
thanks

Re: trying to verify #1 tdc

The flywheel has a flex plate, with a ring of bolts. Many misinformed people remove those bolts instead of the center nut when trying to remove the flywheel.

Set #1 as close to TDC as you can guess it. Remove the ring of bolts and turn the flywheel so 0 is as close to the pointer as possible and bolt it back on. Then go to the Link n sync procedure with the depth gauge, .4xx something before TDC, etc to set the pointer.

Be sure to use a little blue locktite on the flex plate bolts and properly torque them. You don't want to know what it'll cost if they come loose.

hope it helps
