Wow, an 8.8 quake in Chile, and a Tsunami warning all the way up to Alaska. I was wondering what that really meant, and then the reports started coming in over the TV.

Crazy stuff, hope all at sea are well and along the shores too.

130 foot wave in Chile just reported on the Weather Channel YIKES!

EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010

MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

When I lived in Monterey we had a tsunami watch and the Darwin Surfing Team flocked to the beaches.

Hmm...I'm not seeing 130' mentioned in Marlboro's OP.

I heard a 7.7' wave going 500 mph heading all the way to Hawaii! What a ride that would be on a surf board! Another sad situation down south though. People need prayers. I hope the worst is over.

Past earthquakes in Chili have produced tsunamis that have killed people in Hawaii. Chili is still having aftershocks near 7.0.

Looks like Hawaiians have about 3 hours to find high ground or a surfboard.

Along the coast we have to take these in to consideration. Port Albernie was hit (I think back in the 60's) and was almost washed away. Even a extra 2 foot tide surge could cause major damage. Look what happend in the Comox valley this winter.

On a scientific note, It has be noted that during a full moon that the pull on the earth as well as the tides produce more earth quakes, as well as more volcanic action.
Is the moon in a closer orbit????

Re: Tsunami Warning/Advisory

A tsunami is a long period wave. At sea it is a gentle vertical rise and drop, often taking several minutes. Most of the time if you're not on dead calm sea and looking for it, you can't even detect it without instruments.

When that wave stacks up in shallow water, it becomes another, often terrifying story.

The safest place to be when a tsunami arrives is several miles at sea in several hundred feet of water. Even "high ground" has hazards.

I hope that folks in Hawaii who have a boat are moving offshore.

I was wondering that too. With the warning time that they've had, I imagine the marinas have had a mass exodus.

The wife and I watched the live coverage in Hawaii on the computer. So far, just surging water and receeding water. But nothing that has exceeded their highest and lowest tides. Anyone see anything different?
