I have the subject motor, 60* V6, with Optical Ignition. It has been great, however, I want to be prepared to do a link and synch on it in the future. The OMC Service Manual I have, identifies a "OMC Ignition Analyzer" as a key tool to set ilde pickup and max timing. The OMC Ignition Analyzer is connected to the timing sensor. The link and sync process involves turning the flywheel until the OMC Ignition Analyzer "blinks", and to verify it blinks at the correct timing at idle and max spark advance..

Can a timing light on cylinder 1 be substituted for the OMC Igniion Analyzer?

YES. --- You can set the timing easy on the OIS motors with a timing light. Even at cranking speed. Just dont forget to disable the S.L.O.W circuit or numbers will be 10 degrees high. Avoid pointing the timing light at the timing wheel on the flywheel. The bright light can cause misfires from the optics.

Good Luck!!
