Need some help . . .

I just bought a 1964 Johnson 3 hp outboard (model JH19A, s# B102912). It runs and is in great shape. In consideration of its age, what needs to be inspected and looked at to keep it running well?

Any suggestions concercing the maintenance of this particular motor would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

mczfishes,

That is one of the finest little engines ever made. If it runs OK, I would leave it alone except the following.

1. If it hasn't had a water pump impeller put in recently, I would do it. It's simple on that engine.

About the only other things I have seen go wrong with these is the coils, and the carburetor float/needle and seat. They'll let you know when eithjer of those acts up.

Otherwise-ENJOY :)

djohns19,

Many thanks! I figured the water pump impeller would be the most crucial and the first to change.

Do you recommend a web supplier of OMC parts? I live only a 1/4 mile from a marine store, however, I would think their inventory is sparse for a near antique like this one.

Cheers!

mczfihes,

I think you would be surprised just what the local guy might have. He can get everything else.

I support the locals whenever I can.

Otherwise, check out: www.theshadconnection.com

djohns19,

I agree. I'd like to stay away from any Walmartesque superstore. Thanks once again.

Cheers!
