87 alpha one mercruser with a 305,ok so i went to replace the bellows and found water in the drive shaft bellow witch did not leak.I looked around and seen a crack on one of the housings where someone hit something and it cracked.I was thinking about jb welding it.As long as it is water tight it should be fine right? And also how do i get that shift leaver off?I do not have the money to replace the unit.I thought i got the boat on a deal but things are changing.

Cant see anything in the 2nd pic. post some more pics a bit further away.If remove the slide is all you need ,go inside the boat where the shift cable connects, loosen the 2 square bolts on the plastic slide, pull the slide off taking care not to lose the square bolts, and pull the core and slide out from the rear housing.

I see the crack in the second picture (at least I think I do).... but that should not have let any water into the drive bellows as there is a primary seal on drive nose to prevent that. If that seal was compromised, then we have a diffent story.

Did you glue the rubber ring in place when you installed the drive? That lets water into the bellows. Damaged mounting gasket or water O ring would let water in that area too.

Why don't you post your pictures big enough to actually see.

Bellows adhesive.... by the way, it is called a bellows, even when you are talking about one (like a fireplace bellows)... "bellow" is the noise you make when you have to replace one!

JB weld "might" seal it up, but I wouldn't trust it. Welding would be a better "fix", but a used bellhousing would be easier/cheaper/quicker/better.....

ok i pulled everything apart in the rear and im wondering if the Gimbal Bearing is bad.It turns easy but a little loose. And by that i mean what is loose is where the drive shaft goes into.I would hate to replace it too.Ive already got a big bill going haha.
