i researched this in my book and i was wondering just to double check i just tore my starter down cleaned oiled and put back together the starter. it was very weak before this so i figured it was dirty or a short was around. now when i click the key i hear an audible click but my volts guage doesnt hit rock bottom like it used to but the boat wont turn either. this is a bad starter right? or is there a sylonoid somewhere that is fried?

When you tore it apart how did your brushes look? How did the armature look? What kind of solvent did you use to clean it?

i used a clean rag, no solvent, the brushes had plenty left, the armature had no aparent damage.

I would get your starter tested then. I think Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts will test them for free.

Go to Engine FAQs, Dude. "Outboard wont start" troubleshoots the starter circuit.

Good chance you just have a bad connection in the high current circuit.

My guess is a weak battery.

well, the volt meter reads 12, and i noticed before i cleaned it the starter would get very hot to the touch after only 10 seconds of turning it over. wehn i plugged it back up and got everything on it cranked the engine one time then stopped. then it wouldnt crank again.

If all else fails, check all of your connections to be sure they are clean and tight.
