Turns over but will not start?

What can the problem be?<br />Could it be the ignition or what?<br />The basics are all ok. I checked the: <br />1 check the kill switch.<br />2 compression<br />3 spark<br />4 fuel<br />5 wires<br />Those are all ok.

Backfire suggests a sheared flywheel key or switched plug wires, MP.

The flywheel is slid onto and attached to the crankshaft.<br />The small metal piece sticking out of the crankshaft is the key, it keeps the flywheel from slipping. If the key breaks, the flywheel can move on the shaft, and the timing of the motor is changed, causing the spark to fire at the wrong time, creating backfire.<br /><br />Or as JB said, the plug wires could be switched, causing the same backfire condition.

thanks, I will look into that.<br />I discovered another problem. The handle, which lets you go forward and back, will not move, the cables seem to be alright, I do not think l drives have a lock on neutral position and I don’t want to push hard and break the handle. What can the problem be?

That would be the throttle. If it is locked up then either the cable is broke or the release pin is frozen. You will have to remove the housing and inspect the cable and the shift locking pin. If either are damaged or broke they will need to be replaced.

AT the base of the throttle should be a button. Depress the button and it should move then. BTW what is this on?

I turned the engine on. I did get it to go in forward and reverse but it tock me great effort.<br />Maybe lubrication, or what?<br />I mean I had to push really hard to get it in forward and neutral, as a did that it became easier but it still requires to much strength.<br />Model 125LD9B. 4 cylinder <br />The boat is a 1989 Bayliner capri with the 1989, 125 hp force L drive.<br />I do not see a button, and how do you check to see for a broken handle.<br />As I stated earlier, know I can move it with the engine on but it takes effort.

I also think my rectifier is bad because when I attach the red wire on to the rod, I cant start engine. I believe the red cable charges battery when the engine is on.

What type of throttle is it? Quicksilver? Teleflex? The control box housing should snap out or there may be a couple of screws. Depends on the model and maker. If the rectifier was bad, the the engine would not start. The action onthe shift should be smooth and should not require a lot of force to move it. My suggestion would be to have the throttle box and cables replaced. It's not that expensive and is easy to do. Follow the wiring diagram and you should have no problem.
