I am now in process of restoring two 1956 Johnson Javelins and I am going to re chrome the control cover doors and side trim panels on both motors. However, one of my doors and two side trim pieces are dented and not worthy of re chroming. I am now looking for these parts. If anyone has a line on them please let me know.

It does not make sense to have one motor pristine and the other questionable.

Thanks for your help.

You might try some of the salvage yards listed in the "Top Secret File" at the top of the page.

those parts can be hard to find in good condition, and expensive. you can gently "massage" the dented parts back into shape. unless they are more than just dented. jmo

Re: Twin 1956 Johnson Javelins - Restoration trim parts needed

I had no luck finding the individual Javelin chrome pieces I needed. So I took a different approach.

I scoured the Detroit Mi craigslist for the last couple of months and happened across an obscure listing for "old outboards" for sale. One of which appeared to be a Javelin. I contacted the owner and confirmed the motor was in fact a Javelin which belonged to his late father. He stated his Dad was the original owner and used it routinely until his passing. Based on that I assumed it was probably a good running motor which needed maintenance. I made an offer over the phone and he accepted it. I then traveled into Detroit to pick it up one early Saturday morning. (and yes it was located in a scary part of town)

However... he turned out to be a great guy and the motor turned out to be an excellent find. I couldn't be happier. The chrome is pristine, the motor turns over freely and it has good compression. I have not decided if I will use it as a donor for the chrome or turn it in to runner. I will test it in the spring and confirm if it runs. If it does, I will upload a video to youtube and post a link in this thread so the rest of you can see it. I suspected these motors still existed in the garages of Detroit. I was right.

That is great!

Now your issue. You have 3 motors to restore, lol ;)

The doors are very hard to find alone. I think I only have 1 spare left, but you would never get it away from me.

I have done a couple '56 Javelins now, would love to see your progress. Keep us updated.

Steve at SilverMarine - Home of the Restored Outboard has reproduction doors.Probably pricey.
He does some amazing restorations.

Steelespike, thanks for the nice words. The only reproduction item I have for the 56 Javelins are the recoil covers(which are always missing) for $45 (not too pricey!!). I wish I had read this post earlier as I do have 2 side spears for the 56 Javelin. Litetwin4, let me know if you need anything else. Steve

Nah don't support that Steve character over at Silver Marine :)

Just kidding, I have bought and traded a few items with him. Highly recommended.
