I have twin 2001-250 evinrude motors on my boat. One motor will turn itself off at any given time. When the motor turns off nothing works on the motor. The fuel pump doesn't work and the motor won't turn over. When I turn the key all the check engine lights come on and won't turn off. When the motor sits for about half an hour everythings works again. This doesn't happen everytime I go out. This is only happening to one of the motors. Has anyone had this same problem or does anyone know what the problem is?

sounds to me like you have a relay or some other breaker over loading or over heating. or maybe its just a weak one from the factory.
this is going to sound wierd but you cant fix it unless it broke. next time it does it shout the other one off and try switching one breaker or relay at a time from one side of the fuse box to the other and see if it fixes the problem. try the engine after each one you switch if nothing then put it back and try another. at least this will take these out of the riddle.
remember i dont know how your boat is wired so you may need to tweek the technique a little.

I don't have a emergency lanyard on the boat.
All the lights work on the dash but there are a lot of wires under it and also in the back of the boat. When I turn the key on all the check engine lights go on and then stay on. Could the key plug have something to do with it? I was going to change the one key plug to the other, but then the motor started to work again. I need to make the change when the motor isn't working.

sounds like the computer is shutting it down, then it cools down and resets.
Do you see any abnormal readings on your guages (temperature for example)?
..otherwise..

You need to have the codes read by a dealer.
Beyond basic troubleshooting its hard to deal with these engines, I hear they're great on fuel, so the savings pay for specialized service.

older engines are simple to wrench but ...they're very thirsty.

I took it to a dealer who said all the codes were fine, but then he was doing it after the motor was working. We couldn't get it to shut off. It takes awhile before it turns off and sometimes doesn't turn off. The gauges are all normal when the motor turns off. One person said that maybe you have to replace the computer on the motor. Before I go the way, I want to see if anyone else has this problem. The computer for the motor cost alot of money.

i also thought of the computer,

not sure if this true for a boat, but for a car or big truck and computer is on the engine ther needs to be a dielectric silicone between the comp and the mount. if thats not there in will cause problems.

as i said i dont know if this applies to boats also.

i still sounds like a relay or breaker thats over heating to me.

my friend had a good idea:
talk to the local marina mechanic and see they will go out with you and see if you get it act up when hes on the boat. then he can check it.

Likely it's the engine computer EMM acting up. The EMM also controls the fuel pump when you turn the key to ON, and it completes the ground circuit for the starting solenoid. That is why those two items do not work until the EMM cools down a bit and the "open circuit" make contact again.

See your dealer for a factory EMM exchange or www.dfitechnologies.com for repair
