im considering buying a 27 searay sundancer. one with twin 488 4 cy, 3.7, 188 hp and another one with twin 5.0 v-8s with 190 hp. how much more torque is in the 5.0. do i need it for this boat. does the twin 4 cylinder engines have enough torque to pull that boat out of the water and keep it on a plane at low speeds.

Probably not.
Neither of them are going to get on plane, or be a speed boat of any sort.
They are cruisers....
A V-8 is always going to have more torque than a 4 cyl. I have a 470 and get great mileage and have decent power, but in a 21' bow rider.
I would opt for the V-8's just because I doubt the twin 4's will get you back if one of them crapped out on you.
Plus that big boat has probably worked the 4's to death and they do have a few quirks to them.
Also you should probably have posted this in the merc section since you dont have a real prop issue.

Welcome aboard. Read up using the search button, just put 470 in it. then read away. belive about half what you read.
The 470 is not a bad engine, its poor maintance and poor owners that give them a bad name.

Take them BOTH for a test run.

You will be surprised how well the twin 4's perform.

As stated, maintenence is key with ANY power package.

The results of your test runs should be obvious when you look at the power to weight ratio advantage of the twin 4's over the twin V8's, with only a 2 HP difference, it shouldn't be much of a contest.

However, you also have to take into consideration that parts for those 4's are getting a bit more limited.

They were a great package in their day.

RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY! Obsolete engines that have known mechanical deficiencies, which haven't been made in 20 years. Some parts NLA, many parts VERY expensive. Don't even consider that boat. If you do, you're insane, and you'll be sorry.

Ayuh,... You Don't want a 470, muchless 2 of 'em...
As Willy says,...
They've been out of production for 20 years,...
They were marginally reliable when they were being built,...
And,...
The part # NLA is quite prevalent for 'em...
