new to this board, very impressed with the quality and quantity of info and advice.
just purchased an '88 GW with twin yamaha 150's. paid only about $1K more than what the hull is worth. Ran the engines in a barrel - started fine, idled smoothly, revved smoothly. Compression on all 12 cyl was 110 +/- 1-2. Both shift rods replaced with stainless. Lower unit lube looked clean. Tilt/trim/steering worked fine. I was not able to sea trial so did not run engines under load. Based on above and price, seemed like a good gamble. Question is: What else should I investigate before running? What are the big gotchas? From reading this board, I know about lots of relatively small things like fuel pumps, lines/hoses, plugs, carb cleaning, etc. - What are the potential show stoppers? (i.e how do i check for water in cylinders with blowing motor, etc.) I bought the clymer manual. thanks for the info

Ahoy, Kenny.

Congratulations on the new ride.

Since the answers to your questions cover many outboards I am going to move this to general outboard.

Good luck. :)
