Not sure if this is the right forum for this but here it is. I have two 9.9 motors and am thinking of running them both on a 14 foot aluminum v hull boat. Would this set up be leagle on lakes with 9.9 restrictions. Or is it now considered 20 H.P.

--------------
Flathead

Re: Twin 9.9's

Hi flathead..

Good question. But I don't think the conservation folks will buy it or we would have probably seen double 9.9's before now. We got several restricted lakes around here in Ohio where I live and I have never seen such a set up. But hey, who knows? Can't hurt to ask first though. Maybe if you tell'm the second one is just a kicker....... :D :D

2 x 10 is 20 hp. The most cool boat on the lake. But still illegal. But what do I know ;)

Re: Twin 9.9's

The regulation down here reads "boats powered by less than 10HP", so it wouldn't work. Interesting idea, though.

Re: Twin 9.9's

The regulation here states " the use of motors in excess 9.9 prohibited" Sure would be a cool setup.

-----------
Flathead

2 10 horse motors dosent actually mean 20 hp , its really only 10 hp with a kick in the pants , you might be able to use that as an argument but i dont know if theyll let you run em

No, 10 hp plus 10 hp is 20 hp. It just seems less because of the additional drag, propping, etc. But it's 20. ;)

Re: Twin 9.9's

I once ran into a guy up on Lake Ontario that was at the ramp. I asked him why he had twin 9.9 HP Yahamas on a 18' Lund Tyee. Nice setup. He said he was from NH and on Lake W (I wont attempt to spell it) they had a max 10 HP rule. Two motor were OK. Check with your local authorities. ;)

Funny how it always was my impression that those rules were made to protect our water supply and environment.

Re: Twin 9.9's

Thanks for the replies. Mumblerone, it does stand to reason that twin 9.9,s would not be a problem. Rolmops, I fail to see how two 9.9's on one boat would make any more of an impact on the invironment than me with one on my boat and my brother next to me in his boat with one. I guess you could make an argument on a shore erosion thing from a larger wake. The lake I have in mind for this is restricted because of a lot of sail boats. Do any of you guys know where I could get some gear for setting up the linkage I would need for this.

----------------
Flathead

Flathead....check iboats store for auxiliary motor steering links. Should give you an idea of what's out there.

Re: Twin 9.9's

I've got the steering problem licked. I have never run twins before and I need some ideas as how to go about linking the the throtle controll. As far as cutting out one of the engines I am thinking about just cutting off the gas to one motor when I need only one. by the way--two johnson 9.9 1994

--------------
Flathead

Re: Twin 9.9's

There is a 35hp limit on some rivers in our State. You can have two 35 hp motors on the boat.....but only one in the water. ;)

"I fail to see how two 9.9's on one boat would make any more of an impact on the invironment than me with one on my boat and my brother next to me in his boat with one."

Because then your brother would have two, and then everyone would have two. So the impact would probably double. ;)

Re: Twin 9.9's

Flathead, didn't your State (and area lakes like Nockamixon) just raise the 9.9 hp limit to 18 hp? I saw a Bassmasters registration form that said 18 hp.

If that is true, you would still be over the 18 hp limit with twin 9.9's. You'd have to de-tune them a little (which is what we do here with our 40's and 50's to 35) to be legal.

Re: Twin 9.9's

Forktail, Yes Nockamixon did raise the limit to 18 HP and I do fish there alot. There are still a few lakes with the 9.9 I like to fish around me. I never could figure out why 18HP? why not 20.Does anyone make a 18 motor? I am going to set it up and see what happens. Across the river from me in Jersey they get away with two 9.9 motors and I do fish there from time to time. Now, I need help on this throtle linkage. Is there a kit or something available. I've checked online with not much luck.

------------
Flahthead

Re: Twin 9.9's

They must be in cahoots with Tohatsu/Nissan.

9.9x2 = 19.8 hp. = illegal.

if environmentalists are concerned with emissions than why don't they mandate the motors over 9.9 must be new tech, or is the shoreline erosion that much of a consideration?
