Hello out there!
I have 2 v-drive twin crusaders! 1 needs replacing the other needs rebuilding!
Any opinions/ideas of companies and areas to get this problem solved would be greatly appreciated! The powerless boat is located in Dewey Beach, Delaware & is in the water:(! I will be moving to Myrtle beach for the summer and living in between the two areas! It would be nice to get her powered and use as a liveaboard

thanks Ashley

Re: twin crusaders in need of

First, WELCOME to iboats, Ashley!
Next, please take a moment and fill out your profile information (so we can see exactly what Model Carver you're inquiring about). It's located on the blue header at the upper left- click on "User CP".

OK, the first thing we need to determine (after we have the boat model) is this: how do you know that one engine needs replacing and the other just rebuilding? Did you have the previous owner or a qualified mechanic tell you so? Are the engines readily accessible or are they buried under the salon floor?
If they indeed both have to come out, be aware that it's a big job and will be fairly expensive. I'm not familiar with the Dewey Beach area, but I'm sure there are some decent marine repair places close by. I'd think the last thing you want to do is have it towed somewhere else....

To give you a VERY rough "ballpark" number, my Silverton is also an '84 and I replaced one of my Crusaders (straight-shaft inboard) 2 summers ago. I removed the old engine myself to save labor costs (which were estimated at 11 hours), and the shop I used had the ability to install the new one while the boat was floating (which, I think, is pretty rare). I bought a "remanufactured" long block with a 2 year all-inclusive warranty. The shop completely assembled the engine and test-ran it in their shop before putting it into the boat. My out-of-pocket costs totaled $5500, which I thought was a good deal. Their labor rate at the time was $75/hour. As part of the re-power, I had them install some new parts (plugs, wires, cap, engine-cooling pump, etc.)

Not to add insult to injury, but if you do end up pulling both engines, I strongly recommend you have both v-drives rebuilt at the same time. If you don't, then when they need repairing, those "new" engines will probably have to come out again. Just a thought.
