Twin Crusaders with 800 hours-Too Many Hours?

I'm looking at a 42' Uniflight Motoryacht with twin Crusader 454's that have 800 hours of running time on them. The engines look good but I'm having a mechanic do a compression test on them prior to making an offer. I've always wanted compression tests on my outboards to be at least 100 pounds with all cylinders within 10 pounds of each other . Does this hold true for these Crusader's. Can anyone tell me what good compression numbers would be? What about the 800 hours? Is that too many hours on these engines to start with? Thanks for any help or advice.

125-145 ,depends on the piston and cylinder head voulume
Should go atleast 1800-2500 hrs , If FWC ,and serviced like they should be ,almost forever with the exception of the risers

What he said. I've seen fresh water cooled motors at 1500 that ran fine. They hold up a lot better than a raw water cooled engine, but maintenance is still very important.

These Crusaders are fresh water cooled. The broker said that all Crusaders are. I've had a lot of experience with outboards, but these inboards are a whole new animal to me. How does the fresh water cooling system on these motors work? No salt water is used to cool any part of them? What destroys the risers over time? I was wondering about the 800 hours because the broker stated that the only drawback to this vessel was the high hours on the engines, but I've never thought of 800 hours as being too high on an inboard. Thanks for your info.

If the price is right the hours are not too high.

Are they the original engines? How old are the risers?

Consider a professional survey of the entire boat.

Look for over spray, painted hose clamps, a painted carb, non OEM manifolds or risers.

Check the mounts and general rust factor

If the interior has new cushions, carpets and drapes, the money has been spent and he is trying to get it back.

If compression test is OK, I'm having a survey done next week (both on land and in the water). These are the original engines. Risers replaced in 03. I looked for overspray, worn engine mounts, oil in bilge, rust, loose connections on hoses, new paint, etc. Didn't see anything that seemed out of the ordinary. The interior was redone in 03 and is in good condition. Price is right.
