im trying to perchase a 2004 2901 century with twin yamaha F225 four strokes one engine has 216hrs on it and the other 257hrs what do you think of the diffence in hours, the dealer said maybe someone left the ignition switch on and bumpt up the hours can that happen. i mean it doesnt make sense with 21st century technology for the clocks to work with switchs and not the engines them selves...

Unfortunately it can happen. Most Hobbs meters ( hour meters ) are activated by the ignition switch. As long as juice is running to it they can definately be running up hours - even sitting at the dock or on a trailer.
They just recognize that the motors are energized - whether they are running or not. I don't think your dealer is trying to pull your leg on that one.

Just because a boat has twin engines does not mean both were always running. It is not uncommon to just poke along on one engine. No need for both engines at displacement speeds.

Silvertip is right on. Alot of offshore fisherman only troll on one engine or the other depending on speed required. I normally troll on one for a while, then the other so the hours stay close.

all of the above.
myself I would rather look at the computer printout for hours of run time at various RPMs for a base of what maint has been done or needs it.
as far as shutting down 1 engine while trolling each capt does it different.
I have one charter guy that swears the harmonics on the left hand motor attract fish so he only shuts down the stbd.
so beats me but I would not get hung up on it.
me? I would want the maint records, a printout on both engines and a cylinder leakdown test as well as a gear case pressure test.
at 200 Hours OR 1 year, whichever occurs first, there are some specific maint items.
have they been done?
