I am purchasing a Pro-Line 25 Sport, and I cannot decide to go with the single 225 Honda 4 Stroke or the Twin 130's. Cost difference is 12k.
Anybody have any insight?

I would say that it depends on what you are planning to use the boat for. Off-shore ALOT, then get the twins. If you are primarily going inshore and occasionally offshore, save the $$ and get the single. You do not want to base your decission on docking ability. If is only a 25' boat, docking will not be difficult with either set-up.

I agree with CGG, two engines means double everything. It can add up quick.

Knightgang

Aw c'mon! Who here among us wouldn't want the coolness of a PAIR of outboards on the transom? If you can afford a 225 on a new 25 footer, you can afford the twins.

go with the twin but skip the 130,s unless it a great price the new 135 are out and at least 20% better on fuel at cruise, and lighter too you should be able to get a pair of 130 honda motors at or below 18g rite now . good luck any way you go you will be happy with the honda motors

There you go! I have never been a big fan of the H 115/130s. Always thought for the power and price, they were TOO heavy; especially compared to the Yamahas.
Hey honda cat: Are the honda 90s ever going to be fuel injected? Are they already?

Putting the cost aside I would go for the twins. I have a 23' CC with twin SeaDrives and have gone out or come home more than once with only one purring. I run from Miami to the Keys and do go offshore from time to time. I would hate to be caught in the Gulf stream - have an engine quit and look to the back of the boat and find only one there.

The Honda 130's have a great reputation for reliability and smooth operation. THey also have an equally deserved reputation for being extremely heavy and sluggish. Because of this, I would shy away from doubling up with the 130s. If you want double Honda's, the 135 V-tec is comming out soon. I would wait, otherwise, get the single.

The honda 135 are out all ready we just rigged a pair on a 25'mako hope to get a shake down run in the next week or so i will post the results as for the 130,S these are GRREAT motors and most of the talk about weight is exagerated (in my openion) the ones i have seen that seemed slugish where ALL over proped My rule of thumb is two pitch sizes lower than the same two stroke these morter should see 6000 rpm or real close to it not 5500 rpm like most people prop them. I would not hesitate buying a pair if they are 8500.00 EACH or so and they can be had at that price in a brand new non current or scratch and dent and how long does it take to get a couple scratches in a new motor after it leaves the show room .good luck what ever way you go i dont think you will go wrong with either motors .I was told they are working on all new 90/115 fuel injected models may be out as soon as next august .

In my opinion, get the single and spend the change on a good kicker. It will be lighter, and cheaper to run/maintain. If you lose one engine, the other won't be able to plane the boat anyways, so a good kicker will push you almost as fast as the single engine will. I just fixed a boat with one spun prop hub, 33knots with both engines pushing but it would barely do 10 knots with only one. A good kicker will probably give you 8-10 knots. You will also be able to fish much better on the kicker than the main (if you fish). The docking advantages are a bit over-rated I think. Twin O/B's tend to be so close together that you lose a lot of the advantages and an O/B is very manouverable anyways.

The airman's suggestion is a good one, especially if you're a fisherman. Put a little 9.8hp kicker on my walleye boat a month ago and it was the single best thing I've done to that boat. Made it into a real fishing boat:
1) nice slow troll speed while saving big motor for high speed
2) docking is easy when you can just creep up on the dock
3) better for running in the shallows as the lower end rides higher and costs less than big motor
4) less fuel burned at slow speeds
5) hand tiller makes it more maneuverable than big motor
6) plenty of oomph to keep bow on track when trolling into wind.
7) and, of course, it'll get you home smartly enough, it just won't plane
Get one with electric start (as well as manual)and an alternator and it'll be convenient to use, cover you for most anything and won't cost a lot.

Season's over up here, but can't wait to put that little thing to work next spring.
Bob

you will have the same speed either way! But the twins will be a lot cooler! the extra 35hp in the twins will make up for the drag of two lower units.

After readin all these responses, I would think you are further away from a decision than you were before. The kicker suggestion by airman was an excellent point. Really? Wouldn't be able to plane on just one 130? I'd look into that. Let us know what you decide and when you will be taking us all out on a day trip.

Which is best for EVERYTHING but higher cost?...twins. Which is better for the pocketbook?...a single. Chances are you won't break down with either if you keep them highly maintained. So how much aggravation is getting towed in VS having another motor to do it for you? How far offshore are you going (Bahamas?), etc, etc, etc? For offshore I'd do twins and inshore a single. Twins are safer but you pay for it.
