hello folks!

This is my first post ever and I've got a real crazy newbie question. I recently bought a 28ft Bayliner (1985 Contessa) with twin engines (Volvo Penta AQ225D's). The boat has been sitting for a long time (4 years or so) and when we bought it, the previous owner included both outdrives, although only the 2nd outdrive was on the boat at the time (one of the reasons he sold it was he never had the time to work on it). Anyway, the 1st drive looks rebuilt, and it still has the model plate # on it, volvo penta 285. The second outdrive looks like it's in rough shape, so I assume thats an oniginal, but it's a different model. They looked so close when I saw them, I didn't realize it but it looks like the 2nd outdrive is a SP-A (although I'm not sure which submodel it is since the model plate is gone).

Quick questions: It looks like all the mounting gear and everything for both outdrives work, but am I Ok mixing outdrive models? Both engines are the same, AQ225D's.

On the 2nd outboard with the model plate missing, is there some other place where I can look to help identify it?

Welcome! As long as the ratios are correct and match, you should be fine.

Awesome! Thanks! Is it cool if i ask another question?

I'd like to change the gaskets, oil, and do whatever other maintenance I can on these outdrives since I have them off.

The question is: what types of repair kits or maintenance packs would you reccomend for a 285 ad sp-a?

Thanks again guys I really appreciate the help.

typically, with those type of outdrives you only have to remove the upper gearbox to perform the routine maintenence and inspect the outdrive for problems.

The 285 and sp-a had different transom shields and the sp had power tilt and the 285 did not. Are you sure what you have?

Post a pick if have one.;)
