Twist throttle on tiller won't stay put

I have an older Evinrude 6hp Fisherman motor mounted on a sailboat.

Motor runs fine, no issues except one.

Because it is on a sailboat I don't actually hold the tiller for the motor, it stays in the upright position and I use the sailboat rudder to steer.

When I had the 15 on it I would set the throttle where I wanted it and just cruised.

However this 6 hp has an annoying issue.

When I throttle up and get going, the throttle won't stay put. It starts getting slower and slower, and I have to reach back and jack it up (twist it) again....and again it starts slowly twisting itself back towards 1/4 throttle and then stays.

Is there an adjustment to tighten the twist grip so it stays still??

It's very annoying

Without knowing the specific year or model number of your motor, the qualified response is OMC-built tiller motors back through the 1950's have a friction block & spring inside the throttle grip that was designed to maintain a steady throttle setting. While this mechanism is non-adjustable, new parts if still available might solve your problem. Another approach would be to connect remote controls that will give you better reaction time to gears & throttle than your current arrangement. FYI, it is recommended the friction block be removed from tiller motors that are converted to remote control but since yours is probably worn-out, it should not be necessary. Good luck with your project. BTW, how's the Feathercraft?

I wanted to put controls on it, but where it mounts on the sailboat it is to close to the transom and there is no way for the motor to swin back and forth with the cables hooked up...I was bummed about that, but there is just no way.

I can get the year/make later on...It is a late 60's motor i know that much.

Feathercraft is fine. Currently is all stripped back down and stored upside down in the back. Eventually one day I will put her all back together, but not now. We ran it for 2 years as you see in my sinature link....but then moved on to other boats for a while.

Currently I have a 23 foot sailboat.

I will never sell the feathercraft

On the end, under the twist grip should be a large strong spring that puts tension on the mesh gears. If someone was using it as a remote at one time, they may have removed that spring.

The friction parts are in the handle in your last pic. Take it apart and see what you find.

Right...

i took it off and there is a big spring in there, and two "metal halves"

it was very stiff so I gave it a little grease and put it back together...

It is much smoother now and not as hard to throttle up, but same thing happens. When I let go of the tiller it goes from the setting I "choose" and moves back to about 1/4 throttle..

Do I need a new tougher spring? Or can I adjust the two metal "sleaves" out some? I can take a pic of this part if you need...trying to get it right for tomorrow's outing

this is just a suggestion, and a possible temporary sollution. how bout a couple of tight half hitches with a bungee cord around the grip, and hooked back to the carry handle? wouldnt be pretty , but would probably work.
