Ok...so like I said in my scenario above the original pump (which is now your backup) won't do much if it turns on because the valve is shut. If you take on a lot of water and she sinks the insurance company probably won't like that if they see it! :'(

Here's some good reading about bilge pumps:

Is there no such thing as an automatic check valve for this application? It would simply be a flapper that would only allow water to flow in one direction. This way, if the lower mounted bilge pump turned on, it wouldn't backflush through the existing bilge pump. However, if the water got high enough for both bilge pumps to turn on, they could do so without manually having to open the valve. I believe alot of fuel tanks have them on them so that you can no longer syphon fuel from the nozel.

What happens when you're "at sea" and the lower (newer) pump quits working? Your old pump will turn on, but it will backflush it's water through the newer pump and back into the bilge, i.e. you sink. At the least you need to install another valve between the new pump and the 3 way splitter so you can isolate either of the pumps.

Igo getting back to your leak, I found one the other day checking my hull, my boat has a back swim deck and the seam that holds the top and bottom of the boat together has a small space... hence a leak under load and coming off plane
