Two boats - which one to buy?

I'm in a bit of a quandary here. I have two boats I am looking at, both are appealing to me. I'd like to solicit some opinion here.<br /><br />They are basically identical boats - 22 ft. Doral bowriders but, one is newer and has a bigger motor.<br /><br />Boat #1 - 1996 hull, 2000 150 Merc EFI with 25 hours. Price $14,000<br /><br />Boat #2 - 2000 hull and motor. 200 Johnson. Low hours. Price $20,000<br /><br />The boat dry weight is about 3,200 lbs. I'm thinking the 150 is bare minimum power for water skiing. Is a $6,000 premium justified for the bigger motor and newer hull? Opinions welcome.

Depends on what you want. The 200 is certainly going to be faster and have a better hole shot. It will use more gas too...

In my opinion, we can only get you to the church you have to take the vows....<br /><br />Your boat, your lifestyle and boating needs. I have to assume those are canadian dollars. I will say that 150hp seems a little thin...<br /><br />Good luck and keep us posted.

I would always lean towards the most horsepower you can afford.

I converted the prices to US. I also mis-stated, these boats are centre console, not bowrider. Would that make a difference on your opinions on the price? Any data is good. These are asking prices and the sellers are negotiable.

My error. Ran a check on BoatTrader and the price on the 2000 boat /w 200 looks to be in the ball park after all. Didn't run a check on the '96. But a $6k difference is reasonable to me.<br /><br />Kelly

Dhaley, didn't mean to ignore your question. The problem is, I haven't ridden in either one yet. There's still ice on a lot of our lakes here so I've done visual inspection only. My next step is to sea trial the boats but I like to do all my due diligence before requesting a demo.

Posted this question as a new thread. I thought I should move it here and let the other one die.<br /><br />What kind of performance should I expect from the boat with the 150hp motor? With a weight of 3300 lbs., what kind of top speed can be expected? Are there formulas for this? The hull is a modified V, I believe.

i get 42-43 mph out of my 1998 150hp johnson on a 20' cc, which is a bit lighter than your boat. i would guess 36-38 with the 150. the 200 would be a better match for that boat, especially if you carry passengers. good luck-

i would go with the one with the 200 hp motor. although for 6k extra you not getting alot. I would get the guy down to 18k or 19k max. BUt the 200hp would make me happier. The true test will come during the sea trail..<br /><br /> I have a 18' (2500lbs) bowrider with a merc 3.0 which turns 130hp I can do 45 to 50 mph with only me in the boat.However its not near strong enough to do the towing I want to do. I wish I would had gotten something with a 4.3 (190hp). so if you wish to tow, go big.<br /><br />just my $.2 <br /><br />thomas

You'll always be happy with lots of hp but never happy being underpowered, If you plan on Lake Ontario you'll be glad to have big power, trust me you'll need it if you ever get caught out there in a 5 or 6 foot seas a 150hp 22foot boat will struggle to climb those monsters.
