two cycle timing

Recently been active on several threads regarding my newly acquired but non-running 15 horse 1985 sea king. The model # is VWB52122 and the serial # is 58X3756. I've done some work already including new plugs, cleaned and set points, cleaned heels of coils and flywheel magnet area, removed and soaked carb, etc I was told on one thread that I started that if I had set the points that I would have to reset the timing. I have no idea how this is done. Can anyone tell me what is adjusted in order to change the timing? Also , are there any good resourses on this procedure? I looked for a Clymer manual for this engine but was unsuccesful. Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge. Bruce. PS I have 100 lbs. of cylinder pressure on each .

If you set the points to .020, the timing should be correct. Maximum timing advance and carb opening is set by the stop plate bent into the points carrier and that can not be changed. Throttle is synchronized to the carrier plate cam by the position at which it first contacts the cam.

You should always check/adjust timing after messing with points. Make sure you set the timing at the rpm specified as points are centrifigal advance.

Man, I'm more confused than when I started. If I'm reading the responses on this thread correctly, the one says that timing , as far as when the plug fires in relation to piston TDC is not adjustable, while the other response says that timing should always be checked after messing with the points??? Am I reading these right or am I missing something?
