two plastic pieces on shift linkage?

my buddy has got an older 65 merc, and i showed him how to change the impeller. now i'm trying to help him reinstall the lower unit. ther is two plastic pieces that were slipped over the shift linkage on the lower unit. i can't figure out what they are for. does anybody have a diagram of the lower showing these pieces, or know what they are?
serial number is 7003580

There should also be a guide for the reverse lock rod up in the driveshaft housing. The 2 plastic parts are fitted as follows

1. Put the lower unit into neutral.
2. Place the grooved side of the plastic spacer towards the gear housing. Locate the tabs on the spacer in the recess of the gear housing.
3. Locate the high part of the cam(at the upper end of the ramp) to face forward.

Fit gear housing to engine and hope for the best :D:D:p
