Re: two stroke oil

As long as it's rated TCW-3, I can't see why not.....

Re: two stroke oil

I am having to totally rebuild my merc. 75 hp, the crank is ruined etc... I have run this motor for 15 years. Upon its failure I was trying to figure out why it failed? I noticed that somehow I mistakingly used about 10 gallons of fuel mixed with Quicksilver PWC oil instead of Outboard oil. I have been told the PWC oil is even better than the OUtboard oil by one mechanic and another mechanic told me the reverse. So what is the truth? Did I accidently ruin my engine? or did it just die of old age?

Sorry for the ignorance. What is PWC oil? How did you ruin your crank? What were the indications; gouges, burn/overheat marks, scrapes?

Just curious as I'm sure others are too.

Mark

Re: two stroke oil

I believe they added that to compete in the stores with other brands of PWC oil. I've never heard of it being designated for use on Sportjets which use outboard powerheads. Other PWCs use snowmobile motors and those may need better lubrication due to higher revs. So I would think the PWC oil to be superior to outboard oil. I don't think that caused your engine failure. Both are still water cooled marine engines.

Thanks for your response, I believe the same about the marketing thing. The gallon container I have looks exactly like the regular Quicksilver Jug except the ink used is purple with pictur of a Jet Ski. and the oil is kind of purple instead of bluish.

I did just find a site that said:

QUICKSILVER PWC 2-CYCLE OIL
Meet the high-performance demands of SeaDoo, WaveRunners, and other PWC's specifying the use of an API-TC oil
High temperature stability
Increased wear protection
Reduced smoke emissions
Not intended to be used if a TC-W3 oil is specified

And another that says:

QUICKSILVER PWC 2T OIL 4LTR 92-881164Q1
Part No: MD284302
4 litres
Engineered for air or liquid cooled watercraft engines that specify the use of API-TC type oils including waverunner, seadoo and polaris watercraft. This synthetic blend PWC oil utilizes an enhanced rust prevention package with superior anti-scuff properties to ensure the ultimate protection for your engine. Not intended for use in engines that specify the use of a TCW3 type oil.
If your engine manufacturer recommends the use of a TCW3 engine oil, use
Quicksilver premium cycle outboard oil.

I would have a hard time blaming the oil you used when you only used 10 gallons of fuel mixed with this oil. Normally the only problem doing what you did would be unburned oil running down your lower unit from the exhaust.

Re: two stroke oil

I used to use TCW-3 outboard oil in my hot running 2 cycles (so I only had to stock 1 type of oil in the shop) till I read that there are different formulations for outboards because they run under a different type of stress due to the peculiarities of boating. So when I bought my new chainsaw, I got some oil with it. (Beins it was in warranty and all. Grin)

Mark
