Re: Two Stroke vs Four Stroke?

I dont know about Kerosene burning E-Tecs, but most manufactures sell kerosene motors in markets other than the USA, CA and Europe. Merc sells Marriner kero motors and Yamaha does also I think. I dont know because I am not old enough, but in the 50's alot of differant motors where duel fuel in nature.

BTW I would like to add that the reason you are seeing so many companys going four stroke is because its the easiest, most cost effective way to meet the regulations imposed by the EPA. Not because the four stroke deisgn is so much better. With new alloys and composites it will be possible in the future to run two strokes at compression ratios as high as four strokes. Then any efficiancy advantage four strokes have will be null.

Something to keep in mind...only two of the six outboard manufacturers are all four-stroke. And of that two, only one has switched to four-stroke. Suzuki is the only one who has made a total switch as Honda has never known how to build a 2-stroke.

Re: Two Stroke vs Four Stroke?

That is true, but the only one that has truely embraced two strokes is Evinrude/Johnson.
Yamaha's HPDI line hasnt been really updated in some time and the models offered are limited to high HP sizes. Merc's Optimax hasnt been really updated in some time either and is also in limtited sizes, althought less so than the HPDI. Same with Tohatsu.
BTW Honda builds has built some really great two strokes, just not for the outboard market.

I saw someone try to sell a carbed four stroke as "ready for Tahoe", and have been told "only four stokes are legal there" for Tahoe and other lakes. I remain unconvinced that either is correct in light of the actual regulations. Yes there ARE some restrictions. Best to read for oneself if you plan on boating here in sunny funny California.
Well, I no longer live in California, I am now in IL, where to my knowledge there are no restrictions, but what happens on the coast, almost always finds it's way inland.

Anyway San Pablo reservoir is the primary lake I was speaking of. I have fished this lake since i was a young child, and 2-strokes were always alloud untill about 5 years ago.

Here's The information:

San Pablo
East Bay Municipal Utility District

General Information

San Pablo Dam has 866 surface acres and 14 miles of shoreline which offers anglers their choice of fishing from boats, both private or rentals, or from shore. Amenities at San Pablo include a well stocked bait & tackle shop, fish cleaning stations, a handicap fishing dock, an 8 lane launch ramp, a variety of boat rentals, picnic grounds, a children's play area and the San Pablo Grill serving cooked to order breakfast and lunch with a lake view. This EBMUD reservoir is a drinking water supply and therefore no swimming is allowed. EBMUD’s Board of Directors has voted to amend Section V of the Watershed Rules and Regulations to continue to allow the use of low emission (4-cycle) Motorboat engines at San Pablo Reservoir so long as the MTBE level in treated drinking water from San Pablo Reservoir remains below the District Water Quality Goal of 0.5 parts per billion (ppb).

-TheChad

Re: Two Stroke vs Four Stroke?

Actually only Suzuki has "embraced" 4-stroke technology for outboards by dropping two-strokes. Honda has made some two-strokes...We used to sell their little generator that was a two-stroke, but as far as outboards go. They don't know squat. Both HPDI and OPTIMAX are current with improvements occuring yearly. As far as Tohatsu is concerned...New TLDI models are due out next month with more planned for the future.

The point, if I really have one, is that the industry is in a state of flux. No one technology is forecasted for the future to be " THE ONE AND ONLY". Maybe tomorrow someone will announce that they are introducing a rotary outboard or maybe a new electric motor that doesn't require a battery the size of the boat. Even within present technology there are versions of DFI that are different enough from each other as to to have different names.

While I loathe 4-strokes, they certainly met the bill while DFI was having it's birthing pains. I guess we will all have to wait and see as to what wins out.

A little known piece of trivia on Mercury. Kiekhaefer Aeromarine (Mercury) made 2 stroke INBOARD marine/aircraft engines back in the mid 70s. They were inverted vee liquid cooled and called the KAM I/V Series. The inverted vee was advertised to be better because it kept fuel out of the crankcase and reduced low speed plug fouling.

i guess everyone has their personal preference
but after running 3- omc and 1 merc 2 stroke
i hafta say that the jap -4 strokes have got them beat !
clean,quiet and efficient...
almost 40% less gas consumption, not to mention the oil.

in my opinion, it's a "no brainer"

Just curious...what year were those 2 strokes and how many hrs on each? How many years and hours do you have the 4 stroke?

This is a very good way to look at it. I really want an affordable 25 HP motor that burns clean, delivers power effectively, does not require excessive maintenance, burns fuel effeciently, and weighs less than 100 lbs. Does not exist today, but I hope someday it will. I don't so much care how they get it done, but I am glad to see that there is much effort going into development.
