In a weird, planet-aligning way, I just got 3 brand new, in the box fishfinders, and no, I didn't win any of them on an auction site, or buy them online. Only one boat, so I only need one. My question is, of the following, which would you choose for your boat/needs, and why?

Garmin 400c (no transducer)

Humminbird 383c (color GPS/Fishfinder, with transducer)

Humminbird 343c (color Fishfinder, with transducer)

Thanks guys! (and gals)

The 383 wins hands down.
It has the same dual beam capacity as the 343 c but it also has a GPS unit and a series of maps built in.
As for the Garmin 400c. It is a dual beam, but unless it is a 400c Colorado or Oregon it does not have a GPS unit.If it is one with a GPS unit you would still have to buy the data card in order to be able to use it.

So my opinion is you really have 2 of them. Without the transducer (which will run you ~$70) your Garmin is of little use.

Having said that, if your simple lake or river fishing (small river/lake) not heading for open waters and don't need the GPS, the 343 would work.

I have the 383c. It's a great fishfinder (works very well in the lake I'm in) and the GPS is fairly decent.

If you have all three, I'd keep the 383c. Good news is the transducer, mount, etc for the 343c and the 383c are interchangeable I believe (only difference is the 383 has the built in GPS) so you could essential try them both before deciding on which you prefer.

Lastly, you'll hate the spray off the transducer. Shoots a large rooster tail in the air behind the boat. But there is a fix. I'll post the thread to that shortly.

Here is the thread on the spray off the transducer and what to do to get your free fix kit from humminbird.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=225845

It's important, as before this thread, I believe it was just me installing it incorrectly and was ready to start drilling more holes in my transom. Glad I found the thread before I did.

Good reading.
